If you don't get into nursing school.....

Published

Anyone out there considering other career paths if they don't get into nursing school? I'm also thinking of applying to the RT program. :specs:

We had a respiratory therapist talk to us during clinicals and it was fascinating. Although I think they have to deal with a lot of sputum, which is not my favorite thing. I hope you get into nursing school, but I commend you on thinking of plan B. If nursing is the only option you want, then is there another way to get in? ADN programs, retaking classes, LVN?

Best wishes to you,

Jean

Yikes- I don't even want to consider that option. The only other thing I am interested in doing is sonography.

Me too... OR perhaps going through an LPN program and trying to get into an RN program later. But gosh I want to get in!

I just got a letter. I am an alternate. I really wanted to get in, but this is not a no.....its at least a chance. I have no plan B. I would deadlines for all other programs would have passed, but I haven't looked into anything else. I had thought about sonography but I would need a few other pre-reqs.......plus, I think my heart is in Nursing.

Good luck to you all.

I'm planning to get my EMT in the winter/spring while finishing up nursing prerequisites. But that point I'll know whether I'm in or not, and if I'm not I'll work as an EMT and reapply. If I am in, I'll work as an EMT until school starts.

Yeah- I am prepared to go the LPN-RN route anyway if I have to, I like to shop too much to just live off of student loans and a ramen budget for 4 years lol.:p

Yeah, I've talked to a few RT's and they've actually really inspired me! Also, I had a cousin and best friend from my childhood/teenage years that died from cystic fibrosis.....and my grandmother is a recovering lung cancer patient. So a career in respiratory therapy has a very strong attraction to me.

Yet, so does nursing. Really, the bottom line is that I want a job in health that is rewarding, fulfilling, and gives me a good, solid income.I feel that people in our situation (i.e. studying health sciences) have a great advantage because an educational background such as ours gives us so many career opportunities.

The nursing program I am applying to is at our community college and is an ASN degree. Admittance is based purely on merit and it is extremely competitive.....many applicants with 4.0 GPAs are turned down due to space and budgetary limitations. I think something like 400 students apply every year for only 80 slots. This school is my only option because, due to a family member working at the college, I receive a tuition waiver. It is the only way I can even afford to go back to school, since I no longer qualify for financial aid because I have reached my credit max....and I've got a LOT of student loan debt already; wouldn't want to take out more even if they would let me!

My community college recently cut their LPN program () because they joined a collaborative effort with Oregon Health and Sciences University, who is striving for a more RN (specifically RN,BSN) educated workforce. Which is unfair because it's actually gives people less choices and opportunities. The only LPN program in my area is through Pioneer Pacific technical college, but I'm very wary of them (heard lots of bad things.....) and wouldn't pat $12,000 for their one year program.

Since I have outstanding grades (4.0 GPA), re-taking classes would do no good; I've got the max points available there. It will all be riding on how well they like my essay. But, I'm only applying once. I won't play the game of applying year after year after year....it is SO sad when I see people barely make the cut again and again, even though they are very qualified and would probably make fantastic nurses. During the past year or so I've been taking pre-req's Ive met many people that fit that description. :( If I don't make it in (or as an alternate) the first time, I'll bow out gracefully....give some else dying to get in a better chance; I know I'll end up where I'm supposed to be.

Good luck to everyone!

I have a friend who has this same plan! Do you know if an EMT-Basic can work in the ER as an Emergency Medical Tech?

"Do you know if an EMT-Basic can work in the ER as an Emergency Medical Tech?"

I *think* so, but in my area those jobs are really hard to come by- the open jobs are largely in transport and private ambulance companies. There are also 911 opportunities in the counties (you have to be a paramedic to do 911 in Philadelphia proper).

Specializes in Hospice.

I will apply to every cc within 50 miles if I don't get in. Thankfully my program is first come first serve. My grades are good and my Net is great. So I haven't thought about other healthcare options. But, at least all my prerequs are geared to healthcare just in case!

Switch back over to a 4-year degree.

Specificially the pre-med/pre-dent program at OLHCC in New Orleans.

It will be a bachelor of science in interdisciplinary "health" studies.

It's pretty vague for a lot of post-grad studies. I can do a lot with the degree plus all my courses will go to use, unlike the biology degree.. my courses will go to waste.

It's a win-win situation.

I've always been attracted to dentistry, so maybe I will take a stab at that!!

LOL

I think I will still pursue finishing it anyway. For personal sake.
