ICU interview-Clinical scenarios

Published

Hi,

I graduated in August 2009 and finally I got an interview for a large teaching hospital. It is for the Surgical ICU where I completed my senior clinical preceptorship. The Nurse Manager and the Unit manager will be interviewing me. I researched a lot of clinical scenarios but I am not sure what to expect in the interview. I could not find many clinical scenario questions on this website. I do not want the answers, all I want is some case studies or ICU situations where I can brainstorm and think of the answer. Can anyone recommend me some website, links or any books? I am going to open my textbooks and start brushing up on some basic stuff. Thank You all, allnurses has been of tremendous help to me.

A great ICU site I can think of off the top of my head is the ICU FAQs site:

Good luck!! :)

I think from a new grad, they don't necessarily need a text book correct answer for a scenario. We know new grads need support. I would say always go back to your ABC's if you don't specifically know an answer. Remember that you have resources and let them know you know how to use and find a resource.

here's one scenario that happens: you vented patient accidently becomes extubated what do you do? Bag him. call for help. if he might fly off the vent, ensure you turn off your diprivan or sedation.

Good luck.

Some of the scearios I was given duing an interview

Client came from surgery on med/surg floor HR 150 BP 80/50 abdomen distended

What do you think is going on, what would you do and what orders would you expect?

Client in the emergency room N/Vx3 no bowel movement for a week and absent bowel sounds

What do you think is going on, what would you do and what orders would you expect?

You went into you clients room he complain that you ignore him because you havent been in the room all day

What would you say to the client?

Hope this helps...I had about 7-8 scenario questions but I think you get the idea

Thank you so much people, this really helps and YES I do get the idea.

I just came back from an interview. It went for over an hour and did not include any clinical scenario questions. I will know next week whether I got the job or not. Thanks to all those who helped me on allnurses.
