ICU courses in Ontario

Specializes in emergency.

I'm in my last year of nursing at Humber and I want to work in the ICU for a few years after I graduate. I'm having trouble finding schools that offer courses in critical care/advanced health assessment. Does anyone know some schools in the GTA area that offer these?

I don't know of any schools in the GTA...

However, I am currently taking the critical care courses through Mount Royal College here in Calgary. It is a distance education program, so you WOULD be able to enroll. It has been great so far. You should check it out and see if it would work for you.

It is a great time to take an ICU course in Toronto.

University Health Network (Toronto General, Toronto Western, Princess Margaret), will sponser you to take the course. They will pay for the 10 week course through Humber as well as pay your salary while you take the course. You do your clinical on the units you will eventually be working on. You missed the September start, but keep looking at the postings or call H.R. to see when the next course starts.

I believe Sunnybrook and Mount Sinai will also sponser nurses for the ICU course.

I think you have to agree to a two year committment to the hospital upon completion of the course.

Good luck!

Alexander , just realized you were still in school.

The hospitals require some experience before sponsering you for the course, although the websites say 2 years nursing experience required, critical care nurses are in high demand and in short supply.

I know that the ICU's will sponser you after only one year if you seem keen and interview well.

Hi there,

I'm planning to take a nursing degree course in the future. I'm just wondering whether the online course is recognized by canada nursing board?

Thanks for your great information!

There is no Canada Nursing Board.

Each province has their own College of Nurses.

There is no online course - that I know of that you can do in Ontario.

Some of the courses offered thruough the George Brown degree can be done online, but most must be done in the classroom and their will still be a clinical component even if you are already a diploma nurse.

Durham College in Oshawa hosts the (?only) online critical care course in Ontario. It's a new program started this year. It's designed to be finished within 8 months at your own pace, so far with September start date only.
