I want to but I am scared..........

Right now I work in Med-surg which I can honestly say is NOT for me but I am just doing it because right now it is my only option and people keep telling me well you should do a year or two of med-surg any way. I graduated back in May and started working as a GN in Med-surg for 6 weeks until late July when I took boards the first time and dropped to a PCT because I did not pass the first time but I passed the second time back in October and have been working as a RN for 4 weeks now and last week may have been my last week of orientation the nruse manager on med-surg told me we will see at the end of 4 weeks. So I guess tonight when I go into work I will see if I am still on or off of orientation.

Well, let me say that I DO NOT like Med-surg. The nurse patient ratio on some nights is fair but on other nights it is insane. I am stressed, I dread going into work EACH and every shift. I get sick right before going into work.Normally I love to learn but I keep putting my nose in the med-surg book trying to learn about things going on with my patients but it totally bores me and my attention span is extremely limited.

However, I have a NICU hand book and I can read and read for a while without getting bored about it. The same with the OB text book.

The only problem is the nurse recruiter keeps telling me the same thing over and over there are no positions available in the NICU or women's care area right now. I feel like half the time I am given the run around and half the time it may be true there are no openings but when some do open up they will never tell me about it.

Here is the thing I use to work as a Tech in between my junior year and senior year in the NICU but I quit because ofat the time the Tech's in the NICU was a new position and we were not allowed to do very much and I got bored with setting for long periods of time without anything to do and the nurses did not have any idea how to help the Tech's because they were a little reluctant because of the fact that we were the first group of tech's when I started now I fear that may be the reason why the nurse recruiter in human resources keep telling me the same thing over and over again because of the fact that I quit the first time. As far as I know I did not do anything bad to give them a reason not to hire me again other then the fact that I quit too soon.

I am going to join the Association for neonatal nurses (I forgot the exact name) I have it on paper some where and find out where I can take a NRP class to improve my chances.

Does anyone have any tactful ideas of how I should go directly to the nurse manager. She can be a little intimidating and she may remember me. Is that a good idea considering my that I use to work there before as a Tech? Also so I talk to her in person is that the better way to go about it. The reason why I ask is because I work the night shift and so of course nurse managers are not there at night.

Why don't you give the NM a call and ask her if you can stop by and talk to her ? If you don't think they'll let you transfer look somewhere else. Good luck!
