I want to become a nurse....

Published

Okay so I've been taking care of my mom till she past away Dec 12th, 2010. I was her main caregiver, I was her nurse. I am only 19 and I had to drop out of highschool to take care of her, I'm currently in Pennfoster getting my highschool diploma in concentration health care and will be graduating soon, then I will be enrolling into the community college near me to start going to school to become a RN.

I was wondering if there is any helpful hints or advice or anything I should just plain know? I'm concerned about the classes, I dont know what classes are needed or anything, of course I haven't talked to anyone from the school yet but I was wondering if there was anything I should know or do?

Nursing is my dream job, I've been doing it so long with my mom its 2nd nature, I really want to succeed. I know most people say become a CNA first but I know I want to become a nurse.

So can someone please help me, I'm basically doing this alone....and I'm afaird that I might mess up or over look something important.

Step 1) figure out what nursing program you want to attend

Step 2) talk to your local cc about completing the pre-reqs

Step 3) crush the pre-reqs, and crush means not just to get A's but to be the top student. This makes step 4 easier and worth more.

Step 4) get letters of rec from your professors, preferably the hard sciences. This is why it's important to be the best, data in the letter like "only student I have ever had that got a 100% in my course" and "highest score of 326 students on standardized department final" stand out alot better than "so and so is a good student [cut & paste & repeat].

Step 5) apply to nursing school the day applications are accepted (spring seems to be easier to get into).

Step 6) stalk this forum and schools website for info until your acceptance or rejection letter

comes

Step 7) take a vacation

Step 8) go to nursing school or repeat steps 3-7 until you do.

The best advice I can give is to of course talk to the college you plan to attend, just like the above poster suggested. But, also I wanted to let you know that not all people are able to get superior grades, especially in the sciences. Strive for them, but if you fall a little short of that perfect grade just know that you will still become the nurse you so badly want to be. The school I attend doesn't even accept letters of recommendation, as it is based on a point system . I am one class away from completing my pre-reqs and believe me, the sciences had kicked my ---. But, this has been my dream most of my life, and my second career. Getting a B or a C in some of my classes sucks, but will not stop me from getting where I want to go. You are very smart to be doing this now, instead of waiting like I did. OH, and one last thing...you will not be doing this alone because your mom will be with the entire way-in your:redbeathe. God Bless.

You are obviously motivated to get your RN, and that's are really good start. If you go to the advisors at school and get started now with understanding the program's requirements, you'll be fine. It's just like high school....if you attend class, do the homework and talk with your classmates, you'll pass and graduate. Good for you!!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you all. I'm not going to lie Student4_Life what you said made me a little nervous about the whole grade thing. I mean don't get me wrong im motivated I really want this but when you said "crush them" I was like oh god.....help me I can be the best student I can but that doesn't mean I can be amazing.

Butterfly0328 Thank you so much after reading the first post then yours I finally breathed a sigh of relief and stopped panicking and what you said about my mom was really sweet thank you so much :).

merryeh thank you so much

And Keekeedt Truthfully yes I have lots of questions and the fact that your currently going to clc and know about the school and the classes I was wondering if maybe you would be willing to help or talk to me. I have had a few people talk to me about it but none from the actually school. My dad and I are at a lost, he never went to college and the fact Im almost done with my highschool diploma, I need to start looking into things, like pricing, classes, what and how to get ahold of the school to talk to them, if it is required that I have my act and sats cause I dont and would have to take them at clc......*breathes* lol.

I'm sorry just theres so many questions so many things and the fact I'm only 19 it worries me that Ill mess up or do something wrong and my dad cant really help. So basically would you be willing to help me a little? or something I'm just so worried.

Thank you everyone
