I was turned down by a Recruiter in 30 seconds.

I graduated with a BSN Degree from a foreign country in 2001. I came down here in California right after my graduation and was hired as an IPN. I completed my orientation and was ready to be trained for bed-side nursing and stuff. But I found out that I was not elligible for the IPN Certification since I never had a licensure in the country where I graduated from. The hospital that hired me offered me a per diem CNA position for the mean time and I accepted. I worked there for 7 months but I was relocated to NC. I stopped working for a while. I got married and had a baby. I went back to CA in 2003 but I wasn't ready to take the board yet. I worked as an Admin. Assistant for 3 months. Then I've decided to stop working for a while and concentrate in my review and be a Nurse. I passed te Board after few months of self-review (It took me a while 'coz I have a baby). Now I applied at the hospital which is 15-20 minutes away from us. I gave my resume to the recruiter, she scanned it for 10 seconds and talked with me.

She said that she wouldn't consider me as a new grad since I graduated in 2001 and in a FOREIGN country. She told me that I am going to have a hard time competing with their experienced nurses and new grads. I even told her that I am a competent person, graduated as a Valedictorian, with Best in Clinical Award as well as Leadership Award. And I would do whatever it takes to learn what I have to learn in their facilities. Then she was trying to find out how many times did I try to take the NCLEX which I think is unnecessary to ask. I told her the info above. She then told me that even if worked in a foreign country as an RN, she certainly thinks that I would have a hard time working there 'coz I wan't trained there as a student nurse. :angryfire

Sorry, this is a long thread, I feel so down. :sniff: Anyway, that's not the only employer that I was looking forward to work for/with. It's just not fair being treated that way.

PS: The recruiter is from a different hospital other than the one who hired me in 2001.

If the states works the same way as the UK you'll probably find they have an internal candidate in mind for the job.

I know it's ****** but she didn't ned to say what she said.

Just rememeber that our work can be quite thankless at times and for my part I only do it at all for the times when I can hold my head up and say I did well there!

Remember when you saved a life?

Remember when you listened and made a difference?

In an interview situation that should be the whole world but most managers have no ****ing clue!

My last manager came to healthcare from a supermarket chain

Do what I did when I was new. Find the area you want to work in and apply at ten hospitals. You'll get a job.

The first job you take might not be your first choice but sometimes you have to oay some dues to get where you want to go.

Unfortunately you find your self in that weird place that makes it just a bit harder. Nurses who have worked for years then took some time off have the same problem-

Keep trying and dont give up. Next thing you know you'll be complaining because they call you in too much-

Just wanted to say good luck, and I hope something good turns up for you.

Thanks guys! I agree with you.

Thank you for the encouragement.

WOW. That recruiter sounds awful! Trust me, you wouldn't WANT to work there if that is the attitude the RECRUITER for the hospital has. I'm a US citizen, and I wouldn't want to work for a place that condones that type of discouragement to prospective employees because they aren't "from here". Yikes!

It would have been enough for her to gently tell you why THAT particular place might not hire you, but it is bordering harrassment for her to tell you how you are going to have a "hard time" in life, blah, blah..personal opinions, etc.

Now I feel like calling that recruiter's boss!:angryfire

Good luck with the job hunting, you WILL find a job. :)

Thanks! She was very unprofessional. Yeah, I wanted to tell her that "hey, I'm an American too, and I have the right to work in the States." But heck, I didn't want to waste my time with her anymore. She was too obvious already. Instead of inviting me in her room or somewhere in the office where we could talk, se walked me out of the office and talked with me outside the HR Dept. Her time will come, I have a better opportunity somewhere else :) Thanks ICUsleep.
