im sure there are shortages in a lot of places in the country; however, with the economy the way it is more older nurses are going back to work. now when employers post jobs they can hold out for that perfect applicant and take longer to interview. this includes highly experienced nurses for even the floor jobs (you'll see floor jobs often now require 1 year experience)

That was exactly my situation when I got my current job. There were several experienced nurses in orientation with me. Also, when I applied, it was with only having 9 months of experience. I was afraid they wouldn't consider me since the actual posting said 1 year required. My manager did take my 9 mos though. It is just really hard times right now.

When I was in orientation, there were several experienced nurses in there with me. One guy had been a nurse for 15 years, he took 6 months off to concentrate on his business, then returned to the workforce. He stated he applied several places and the only one who would give him a chance is our current employer.

And personally, I don't think it's a nursing shortage. I don't know what's gonna happen when the December grads come out.

Have you tried applying at other nontraditional places instead of just the "major" hospitals? I recently applied at Wayne in Goldsboro, O'Berry, and Cherry, all an hour from Raleigh and got job offers from each one as a new grad with no experience. Just a thought.

Try Smithfield, Wilson and Goldsboro. (if you haven't already). Smithfield pays really well from what I have heard, but I am not sure how they treat new grads. I know Wayne Memorial in Goldsboro and Wilson treats them right/fairly. I also am turning down a job (full time) at O'berry Neuro Med Center here in Rosewood 50 miles east of Raleigh right before you hit Goldsboro on Hwy 70. I know Cherry Hospital is hiring and they have offered me a position as well (a state psychiatric hospital). Britthaven is here, Davita dialysis, they are hiring new grads. Britthaven (a LTC facility) is giving 5000 sign-on bonus to full time RN, and even more if you work at night or evening. They need evening and nights bad. I applied but can't work nights/evenings due to being single parent, however, my friend works there and it is not bad! I have been trying to get on at WAyne Memorial for a few months due to the hiring practice of using the nursing stipend for college, ect..but I did get on. My next stop was online to Wilson and Smithfield (Johnston memorial)...because I needed a job ASAP. Hope it gives you some ideas.

OH yah, Oberry is a state facility with state benefits as well, and there are tons of nurses from the hospital that work per diem at Oberry and love it. Oberry is well known here for having an excellent work environment for nurses/environment of care. The patients are spinal injury and MR/long term for all. Genetic spinal disorders, ect as well. The interviewer told me it is 5 days/week, 8 hour shifts, and two weekends per month. You get a 10% differential for weekends. and after 3 pm you get extra (I can't remember amount). They wanted me to work 6-10 split shifts a month (till 9:30 pm) which I can't do that twice a week with my kids. But if it hadn't been for that I might have very well taken the position. There are positions in the Adult acute unit at Cherry as well. Just not sure what kind of nursing you want.
