I think I am beating a dead horse

One of our trauma surgeons wants to start routinely power injecting cental lines. I am trying (without much success) to gather data on the subject. As of right now, I wont allow this practice in my department. Anyone out there doing this? If you are, do you have an official policy or do you wing it? Can your CT techs access the central line and hook up the injector? Does the ordering physician need to be present? Who would be ultimately responsible if the cather were to bust? Lots of questions here. I don't mind hand injecting central lines, but I do feel it needs done by a RN. Any information would be appreiciated!!!!!

My Radiologist gave me some information from the American Journal of Roentgenology regarding a study done with Power injection of contrast media using central venous catheters. I used their information and set up a protocol using the injector.

Their study used specific CVC brands which happened to be one of the brands we use here at our facility. It also gives you information on which port to use and the injection rate and psi that is going through the catheter. I also contacted the company (Arrow) and received information regarding the psi testing and pressure tolerance of the cv catheter.

Power Injecting through the CV Line is under the Direct Supervision of the Radiologist or the Radiology Nurse only. I am the only RN down here so I have inserviced the CT techs on the procedure and assisted them with injections so they will be able to inject when they are called in on call or I am tied up with a sedation or procedure. The radiologist is usually here with them.
