how could I be so stupid?

I am so angry with myself. I have been planning and planning for application to the hybrid nursing program and I completely failed to see what was clearly written before me on my very own high school transcript. I took an entire year of biology and NO chemistry.

After receiving about 18 emails from our school about academic advisement week I figured I should go there one final time in attempt to have an advisor make sure I was on the right path. Every time I have gone in to the student services at the MEC they have never even looked at my stuff and said YOU NEED CHM 101. Even yesterday I practically had to beg the advisor to look over my stuff and make sure I wasn't missing anything. Sure enough, I WAS.

I am not blaming MY oversight on NVCC, but what is the point of an advisor if we are supposed to be so self sufficient that they don't even want to do their job? All I wanted was a fresh pair of eyes to make sure I wasn't missing anything and I had to beg for that.

So all my hopes and dreams have come crashing down upon me and the only way I will ever make it in to the Hybrid nursing program starting May 2009 is if they are willing to make an exception.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if I got into the traditional program but it sets graduation back an entire 9 months and I my family can barely afford to get by without me working. I am scared that if I get a job that my grades will seriously suffer, not to mention my marriage, I barely see my husband as it is.

Please, dear God, have mercy on me and soften the hearts of NVCC for me just this once...:bluecry1:

I decided to just go with what is happening. I really wouldn't mind being in the traditional program.

What classes do you guys take over summer break? I noticed there are classes like NUR 135 (drug dosage calculations), that class is not listed on the "Becoming a registered nurse" pamphlet. Who would take that class? Is it part of the traditional nursing program, schedule?

You are required to take NUR135 if you do not pass math test during your first semester in nursing program. I took Flame9's advice and bought a math book, studied a little, and passed that test without any problems. Now we have another one on Monday. Oh, by the way, I hope you get a chance to take Chem and get into nursing program. One thing about being a nurse though, you are responsible for so many things. Let's say, pharmasist or a doctor made a mistake in drug dosage and you administered that medication, you are still legaly responsible. Get used to it. It sounds mean, I know. Even though someone else made a mistake, set your mind on being in trouble for not catching it. I wish you the best of luck. I have a feeling you will get into a nursing program. Do not dive up!

I bought the calculate with confidence on Half.com for a tptal of $4 (included shipping!!)

I think you can forget about them making an exception and letting you into the program without taking that Chemistry class. After seeing all that I have seen with NOVA's nursing program, you are responsible for making sure that you have completed all the requirements. If it is written down and it was given to you, then you are responsible for it. I am sorry it happened to you but your only option is to find an eight weeks chemistry class.

ok, what would you do in my situation? i don't like to drop names but i contacted the dean of nursing asking her if they are willing to make an exception and let me apply for the hybrid program. instead of giving me a yes/no answer, she said "since you still have chemistry to complete, i would suggest that you plan on applying for the fall semester."

well of course that was going to be my backup plan but am i supposed to just take no for an answer and not put up any fight? taking chemistry in the spring does not interfere with starting the hybrid program in the summer. and if i fail chemistry, just pull me out of the program as you would if i failed the math exam at orientation....what the freaking difference?

i just don't know what to do. part of me says fight for what you have been fighting for since you started school, and another part of me says just leave it alone.

if anybody knows of a way i might be able to take chemistry and have it completed before march 25th i'm all ears. i checked with gmu and marymount and neither of them offer a 1st 8 week session.

i don't have vccs open right now so i'm not sure if there is a nova online chem section for early next semester but if there is then you should be able to complete it by 3/25.

the chem requirement is consistent across va cc programs so i'm not sure if it is waiveable.

How frustrating! Does your school offer a dynamic session? Maybe you could wipe it out in a couple of weeks before the application deadline? If you must wait until the fall to apply, you could always get some volunteer time at the hospital to help boost your application! Good luck!

Alot of schools offer online classes you can take at your own pace...OR and I dont know what amount of time you have left or if you already know Chem, you can test out for credit with the Chemistry CLEP, it is 6 credits though so it would be like chem 1&2.

Here is an ACE approved online self paced class..http://www.acenet.edu/nationalguide/course/?cid=6507

Ace (http://www.acenet.edu) evaluates work/alt training courses for college credit. NVCC is on the list of users..but check with them.

This is a company that does online learning programs..Some of the math programs are ACE evaluated, I dont know about the Chem. Here is a link that gives more details about the basic process..

http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-thomas-edison-charter-oak-specific/3261-credit-aleks-corp-mcgraw-hill-online.html

Per the thead it wasnt evaluated as of last June. If you can find a school that does challenge exams, learn with this and then take thier exam. Check with NOVA chem they might do it...

Caution Dont CLEP at NOVA it is outrageous..75 dollar procter fee + exam..Use strayer it is like 20+ exam.

I am not sure what your area of expertise is, but I think you need some other folks to speak up for you.

Never give up.

Sad so many nurses are so mean to each other.

I would take that class 3 times in a row if it were available to me as a new student. THAT is one of the most important areas that you will utilize as a nurse...You may start in med/surg, but if you want to excel... calculations are imperative.

Good luck on your future career. I've been a nurse for 26 years. Just started my beloved DIL on her new path.

I completely feel your pain, I entered the nursing program as an LPN because I thought I would get into the program quicker and decided to work on my last 3 pre-requisites along with nursing, well after taking a trip to my counselor I was advised that I could take A&P II and Probability and Statistics during our summer break and as long as I took Microbiology along with my fall classes now I would be just fine, she kept assuring me that would be the best decision. Well I worked my butt off all summer with the two classes and did exactly as I was advised to do, on the first day back to the nursing program this fall I went in to speak to a nursing instructor regarding something completely different and mentioned that I was taking Micro with the classes and thats when she told me that I had to sit out of the program after the LPN program and could not return until Micro was finished, I felt as though I had been kicked in the gut. I have worked so hard to stay in the "original" class and now I had to sit out, not from failure or anything on my part, but from bad advise. I needed my class to end by Nov. 4 in order to continue and my class doesnt end until Dec 10, so for 5 weeks of Micro I had to sit out and wait 5 weeks to continue with the RN program. It is so frustrating!!! I told the Dean and she said this happens sometimes and Im sorry, excuse me but if you can't give the correct information you should not be giving ANY advise!!! One instructor told me that I should fight it because this one particular advisor had made several mistakes and it was ridiculous, thats why I contacted the Dean! Anyway, I completely feel your pain, sorry for venting!!!! I hope all works out for you, I am currently plugging along in Micro until Dec 10, and classes don't resume until January so I am thinking that a break isn't so bad after working straight thru the summer, trying to stay positive here!!!! Good Luck to you!!!
