I struggle in General Chemistry, and eventually need to take organic chem...

Published

Im worried about having to eventually take organic chemistry. Im in a general chemistry class right now, and im really shaky. The first general chemisty class I took (over the summer...I regret it immensely!) I received a B-...the following semester, I took gen chem II but had to drop it because I couldn't keep up, and I was also taking Anatomy and Physiology II at the same time. This semester, im taking the chemistry class again, and im hoping to at least get a B, but I'm really struggling in the class. I make sure to review my notes everyday, go over the homework problems, and I grasp some of the concepts, but I still struggle with a lot of it. I get tutoring a lot as well...so im hoping the effort will be worth it in the end.

I eventually want to try organic chemistry, but im terrified that I will fail the class. The reason why I want to take organic chemistry is so I have a variety of programs to apply to for the fall of 2018. I live in NY, so the CUNY schools I am looking at require organic chemistry, and I want to try to only apply to SUNY and CUNY schools because of cost. I've looked at Mercy College and LIU...but I'd rather not apply to such expensive programs if I do not have to.

Any advice?

I have only taken general chemistry 1 so I can't speak on experience, BUT my chemistry professor told us that organic chemistry is very different from general Chem. I don't know how true that is, but she did say there wasn't much math, if any, in organic Chem. Maybe ask your professor what kind of difference there is. Good luck!

Hi, I am from NYC and have attended CUNY schools for years. Right now I am at Hunter College and had taken general chemistry past fall, both lecture and lab, for which I got A +. The professor I had for lecture was an amazing woman! She made all of the concepts so clear and we did so many practice questions right there in the lecture so everything was crystal clear. Also, the homework was so helpful in reinforcing the concepts that I know helped me cement the concepts in my mind. She also gave a lot of extra credit opportunities. As a result, the class average was 89%! The lab was a bit harder, but so doable! I thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and lab. I will be taking organic chemistry this spring and I already researched the professor. He is said to be tough. However, I like tough because I know that I will learn from such a professor. If you have a chance, transfer to Hunter (unless you are already in it and may have taken same chem class past fall lol).

On the side note, have you ever figured out why you struggle with chemistry? Is it math, or conceptual understanding? Unless you know the reason you struggle, you will keep on struggling. So act fast!

Good luck!

Ive taken organic chemistry and gen Chem will not help. Depending on the level you take it, it could be easier or harder than gen Chem 2.
