I REALLY NEED HELP!! A&P I

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm about to start A&P I in 2.5 weeks and I'm worried I'll need to already have knowledge on cells. The pre-req for it is either bio 190 (intro to cell and molecular bio) or chem 121 and I took chem so I don't know a lot about cells. Do you think that's an issue for me going into A&P I? If so, I'm going to use my professor's online lectures for his other class to teach myself before class starts.

A & P 1 is where you begin to learn it all, as far as I know that's where you first learn about everything. The cells, osmosis, filtration, the different parts of the body but it isnt as in depth as A&P 2 would be. By THEN yes, you should know more of the cells and what they do and how each part works for each system. I'm sure each curriculum is different but see if you can find a syllabus. A&p 1 is a lot of information but again, it's the beginning for everything else. I think chem will help a bit, but I related my chem experience more with A&P 2, things tied together for sure.

My school had the same format. General Biology was a prerequisite to A&P and you were expected to know about cells, it was not taught in A&P. I took that prerequisite 15 yrs (!) before I took A&P. I still got an A in the class. You don't really need to know too much in-depth cell info, but you do need the basics (organelles and their functions, cellular division basics, ect). Get your A&P text now and read the chapter(s) on intro to biology and cellular biology (usually the first couple chapters of any A&P text. You should be good to go with just that.

I took A&P I and II before I ever took micro and got an A in both. I actually think chem is more useful going into A&P.

My school only had chem and algebra as a prerequisite for A&P. I went into it with no prior knowledge of cells (anatomy was my first bio class, ever. Got a high A in both A&P) Anyways, cells were covered in lecture in the first week! If you want to get a head start, khan academy can help you out, but if intro to bio wasn’t a mandatory prereq, I wouldn’t worry about not knowing it yet. In the scheme of things, while cells are SUPER important, in comparison to other topics, cells are pretty mild as far as difficulty to comprehend. I’m guessing that bio OR chem are a prereq at your school more to have you acclimated to the pace of a core science class, otherwise they’d make them both mandatory. It’s pretty intense compared to most other prerequisites. And now that I’m done with those classes, if I had the choice between prerequisites, I’d 100% rather have chemistry because it’s going to come into play a lot with physiology.

My school also required me to take Bio 121 before A&P 1. And I am glad I did. You need to understand active and passive transport. Also ATP and enzymes. Bio 121 also came in handy when I took micro. You need to understand its structure, function, and purpose. I don't know how your school is but my school was very strict in what we needed to take before moving forward. My first test for A&P 1 our teacher quizzed us on Bio 121 and told us he would not reteach us something we should already have to know.
