I am new here and not in school now, I am trying to go back and have a question

each school has guidelines regarding the length of time your previous credits are good for. usually, it's 7 to 10 years. so the classes that you took 5 years ago should count, but you need to call the nursing program that you want to attend and check, just to be sure. i'm almost positive you won't have to repeat them, though.

however, your main problem is the $3,000 bill. it will be difficult for you to either enroll or even get that school to send a transcript to a junior/community college. i once owed about $175 and the school refused to send a transcript that i needed to apply for a state job. without a transcript, you'll either have to retake the classes at the jr. college or just take different classes that you need while you work on paying off that bill.

thanks for the info. i tried to work is out with financial aid and it was to no avail. i was thinking that starting all over was going to be my only option and i have a ba so i don't think there are any other classes i need. i am thinking about starting over also because i can't go back to work until fall of 2007 when our son is in school all day. so maybe starting all over is my only option...or is it?. that is what i am hoping that someone might have some insight into. i am relieved that the science classes may be good fro 7-10 though. if it is 10 i still may be able to return later and still get the bsn.

thanks for responding...it means a lot to me. not being a nurse is one of the saddest things in my life. i have wanted to be a nurse for as long as i can remember. i am a cna when i am working but it is just not the same.

hi, dont feel bad, i too have been in your situation, kind of...i dont see why you would need to start over...you main problem is your 3k bill...most schools like mine, wont release your transcripts until that is paid...most schools wont accept you until you have had all your official transcripts sent...that was my main problem, i went to a small school for about a year and didnt even have very many credits there..i ended up transferring and graduating from osu..when i went to apply for my masters program i had my osu transcript sent but on my official osu transcript it shows that i have transfer credit...i was thinking about just not having my first transcript sent and taking the classes over but most schools wont let you do that (it was only one class i needed!)...anyway..the best thing to do is to try to pay off that bill its really t he only way around it..even when i tried to sign up for an adn program they wanted all my transcripts! my adn program admitted me but wouldnt give me credit for the classes i took there until i had it sent..what you could do is see if you can get admitted with out it and then apply for financial aid at your new school, if you get any refunds you are in luck! some schools will let you go on a payment plan but the bad thing is they wont release your transcript until its paid off....the school i was at offered to let me pay by credit card (sooo nice of them) maybe thats an option for you! i wish you the best of luck!!!

my advice is just look for a way of getting the 3k and pay so that you may continue. remember even if you start afresh you will spend more than the 3k before you earn all the credits that you may be able to transfer even if they are the arts. i know it may be hard to get the cash but economically speaking, it makes more sense.

btw would it be a good or bad idea to use an old nclex book to study while i am waiting?

Go talk to advisors from each of the colleges that you are considering, find out what their requirements are, what they will hypothetically take (assuming you've paid off your $3,000) and what you'll have to do if you don't pay it off, and then weigh your options and determine which one presents you with the best-case scenario.

Reviewing your old NCLEX (how old?) is probably fine, a lot of info will be relevant enough.

i made a career switch to nursing and also have a ba. i shopped around to schools who would take classes more than five years old; about half of them would. i did have to take some general education-like prep courses anyway, though, so be prepared. i picked junior colleges because a ba made it more expensive to go back to a four-year school.
