I'm currently a nursing student and I need help with studying tips. I don't know exactly how to study so I try to memorize the most that I can. My grade point average is about a 3.0 but I study numerous hours and don't have time for anything else.
Any tips?

studying is a learned skill. sometimes it takes years to figure out what works best for you. however, memorizing everything isn't the most efficient way to do this. these are the links i most often post when people are asking for information on how to study. they come from educators at various colleges around the country who have helped students learn to study. sometimes you have to try different techniques out. if something doesn't work, you try another.

The key to studying is to know where to focus and target the right materials. Make sure you always sit in the front or close to the instructor, you can record the lectures, focus on charts and diagrams from your book, rewrite your notes, study one area at a time, find a quiet place to focus on understanding the materials and do not procastinate. Eat foods that will help you to stay focus and retain the information, fruits and vegetables, vitamin E and exercise.

I would like to point out something that I had to realize in order not to drive myself insane.....
Your nursing instructors KNOW all this material, mostly by heart, because they either are/where actively practicing nurses...that being said... YOU and I as nursing students, cannot MEMORIZE, nor do they expect us to, everything they present to us.
I was personally driving myself nuts seriously thinking I needed to memorize it ALL and feeling like a failure when I could not. Please realize, the more your "Get your hands dirty" the more you will remember and will actually be surprised just how much information you can recall at a seconds notice. Nursing is Definitely hands-on learning. Yes, you will learn meds and their classifications and so on and so on...but if you ask most nurses they too have to look things up almost daily....it is not because they didn't memorize it in school..it is just TOO much info. Heck, even doctors look things up.
Focus on your ABC's....general meds and classifications....hit the high points...the details will gradually fall into the mix....
Remember...you can TELL someone all day long HOW to ride a bike....but they actually need to RIDE the bike themselves to truly KNOW how to ride.....
Thanks to everyone for your advice. I've starting finals, so I haven't had much time.
