I need help with a english project relating to my career field , nursing

1.) What kinds of writing did you have to do to get the job you have?

It is generally a good rule to be able to atleast prepare a resume and cover letter.

Most places in all honesty just have you fill out their application.

2.) What kinds of of writing do you do routinely on the job?

Patient charting which usually consists of broken sentence fragments (LOL) stating facts and observations as well as communications between team members.

3.) How important are writing skills and communication skills to your profession?

Communication is very important.

4.) Which skills are the most crucial?

Written and email, oh yes and correct spelling.

5.) How prepared were you for the writing tasks demanded of your job?

I believe I was well prepared. Most of nursing is hands on skill and critical thinking. That along with basic communication will take you far.

6.) What do you wish you had known in terms of writing before you started work?

I think my basic English Comp I and II were more than enough.

7.) Do you write for personal reasons outside the job. Letters, blogs, journals?

Letters to friends via email and blog occasionally.

I am currently an RN ASN 1 year

Was an LPN 4 years

Specialty in Rehab, LTC and Hospice.

None, really...just fill out a job application and provide a resume.

2.) What kinds of of writing do you do routinely on the job?

Since I work in a mental health outpatient clinic my charting is different...it's more like a progress note. I sometimes also have to fill out requests to send to insurance companies so they will cover certain medications, and I have to SOMETIMES write letters to doctors.

3.) How important are writing skills and communication skills to your profession?

Extremely...if you can't get your point across, patient care is compromised. Plus, since I work with psychiatric patients, the way in which I communicate with them is vital to their wellbeing.

4.) Which skills are the most crucial?

Both are equally important...I have to be able to write effectively but also to speak effectively, for example with patients who are psychotic or are in crisis.

5.) How prepared were you for the writing tasks demanded of your job?

I feel I was well-prepared...I have a Bachelor's degree in English.

6.) What do you wish you had known in terms of writing before you started work?

That doctors had such BAD handwriting! (lol...just kidding!)...Really, I think I was well-prepared.

7.) Do you write for personal reasons outside the job? Letters, blogs, journals? I do write letters and blog.

The secound part of my project was to interview a person with at least a bachelors degree on what composition skills played in your pursuit to a higher education. If you would not mind if you could answer a few more questions if you have time i would really appreciate it. This project is for a english comp project on writing in the work place.

Did you have to demonstrate writing skills to get into the university or program of study that you chose?

How many papers did you have to write in pursuit of your degree or degrees?

Did you have to write a thesis or dissertation to complete your degree?

Could you also give a short bio of yourself.

Yes. I had to write your standard college essay, as well as an essay demonstrating why I should be selected for the college's honors program.
How many papers did you have to write in pursuit of your degree or degrees?
A lot. At least a few each semester.
Did you have to write a thesis or dissertation to complete your degree?
Yes. I had to write a community assessment paper (which turned out to be over 80 pages long) for my Community Health class, as well as an honors thesis in my field to complete the honors program.
Could you also give a short bio of yourself.
Sure. I'm 22, a new graduate RN & just about to start my first job on a sub-acute floor.

[i am the administrator of a nurse run HIV outpatient clinic. I have been doing it for 20 years and have been nursing 25 years.

1.) What kinds of writing did you have to do to get the job you have?

I had to have clear, articulate writing skills, I write for several grants a year and prepare a multitude of reports.

2.) What kinds of of writing do you do routinely on the job?

Grant and report writing. I also write protocols, standardized nursing care plans, and patient education materials.

3.) How important are writing skills and communication skills to your profession?

Critical. No grant, no clinic.

4.) Which skills are the most crucial?

Clear articulation without redundency

5.) How prepared were you for the writing tasks demanded of your job?

I think I was well prepared. I had the basics and all those things you have to write for nursing school really helped me.

6.) What do you wish you had known in terms of writing before you started work?

Not to be afraid, trust your skills, translate your nursing skills (assessment, planning, etc.) from action to the written.
