I know this site is for nurses but I want to be a nurse one day in the near future so just wanted to see what is being said. I do have a question though. Here goes : I just finished my 1st year in my 2 year degree in MA. I just started to hear that this is a poor choice d/t the fact that we can't get jobs cause the MA degree is a scam. Is this true and I would hate to have to quit with only a year left and 15000 into it. I really just got into this program because the LPN program here was full for the next two years. My long term plan is to finish this get a job no matter the pay ,seeing as I don't work now , just to get into the field. Then on to RN hopefully. Any thoughts would be great TY.

I know what they are doing isn't right or so it seems to me...I really want to futher my career I wish I had just looked at more schools instead of just this one and went in blind not knowing anything about schools.

Well, there's another possible solution: Have you considered talking to other MA schools in the area? If they agree to transfer your credits from your current school, then why not continue somewhere else [you admit you're not learning much currently, anyway]? That way, you would still finish what you started, and possibly get a better education for a lower price, as well.

Specializes in none in school for medical assistant.

Never thought of that....I will check it out. Thank you

medical assistants can't find jobs. and when they do, they don't make any money at all. it's a complete waste of time and money. if it's not about losing the money you already have to pay back, then it should be about the time. why waste another year in school for a degree that won't matter?

i was an stna first, then i went to lpn school for about 5 months, then i quit. went to school for medical billing/coding for about 6 months, then i quit. i was young, and didn't know what i really wanted to do. i finally decided to go to school for my rn. i went, and i stuck to it, and graduated. now i have to pay back that money, plus the money from my other endeavors. what a waste. wish i would've just went straight for my rn from the beginning. don't waste your time honey. think about what you want to do with your life, and get on that path now.

and trust me, ma is not the way to go. get your nursing assistant certificate, which only takes about 5 months at the most, and the cost is very low. where i live about 600.00, and some programs are even free. after that, work in a hospital. you'll get to see what nurses and xray techs do. then you will be able to make a wise decision while making money at the same time. kill 3 birds with one stone.:chuckle

You say that you would like to become a nurse in the near future. Therefore, I don't understand why you are pursuing an MA.

If you want your MA, then by all means go for it. But there are better, cheaper ways to move up the ladder to become a nurse.
