I need advice

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hello everyone!!! I am new to the forum... well posting anyways... I have a dilemma. I have been going to community college for 4years and I'm about to get my AA degree. I have been taking my pre reqs for nursing and have been trying to enter a program for the past 2 years :crying2: . However, it has become hell for me... Im in california and here, there arent any programs really that are easy to get in...well at least in my area SF! so im not sure what to do.. I don't want to wait forever I already feel like I have wasted 4 years of my life because I chose to go to Community college instead of UCB and now I am not getting anywhere with nursing. Oh and I just found out that the college that I have been trying to get in for the past year (samuel merritt college) will only accept transfer students in the spring of '06 and that is it from there on they will only accept freshmen. At first I did not want to go to a college far from home but now I am considering even going out of state and out of the country if available. Im just not sure. I just need your advice about schools that don't have waiting lists and that aren't that hard to get into. Thanks!!!

Welcome to the great family of allnurses. Unfortunately, I am not in CA, so no reall advice. Do wish you the best in everything you do. Take care. :)

My advice, If you can't get in where you are and you are able to, move.

Kaleefornia seems to be giving you no love!!!

Lots of folks on this forum would pack up in a second if there situation allowed.

I am from the Dallas area. There are no waiting lists at the Dallas County Community Colleges (http://www.dcccd.edu). You're either in or not. If you have the pre-req's, a 3.7 or above, and a good NET score you stand a good chance.

I've also seen posted on here that the community colleges in the Philadelphia area and Camden, NJ colleges are a good place for you to look. I have no first-hand knowledge though.

I would find a few schools in a few states like this, figure out the requirements for all of them and see where you match up. Then apply broadly. Wherever you get in, thats where you move. You might have to take a few short trips out to talk to people or to test, but with a cheap airline ticket and a bargain basment hotel but it might be worth it. I applaud your patience. I would go nuts on a waiting list that long!!! :p

This is what people applying to med school do. They find the best schools for their qualifications all over the country and apply everywhere. So why not a future nurse?

Good luck to you. I will keep my fingers crossed and pray you get in soon!!

Thanks!!! I really appreciate your help. I am thinking about moving now... It wasn't that I didnt want to move it was just that I never thought about it and I thought that I would get into a school nearby but I am definitely considering going out of state. I just need a few suggestions about colleges in other states cause I hadn't really considered it before. Thanks for the advice about the Colleges in Dallas I will definitely look into it!

No problem!

All the schools in Dallas have a great reputation, ADN and BSN.

Tarrant County Community Colleges

University of Texas at Arlington

There are many other in the area that I did not mention, but this will help you get started.

Have you checked out Dominican University in San Rafael? I know they are spendy, ok very spendy but they do offer scholarships for transfer students so that might help out a bit in the affordability area. It's just a suggestion, I have checked out their program on line and it seems to be a good one and since you already live in the Bay area it might be a good fit for you. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion I have checked out their program and it is an option for me but it is like a last resort option because in order to get into the program you have to attend their school for one year and then wait for another year to enter the program so before you can start nursing program you have to go there for 2years and I'm really trying to avoid something like that, I want a program where I wont have to wait that long. But I am definitely keeping it as an option but kinda as a last resort.

I don't know if this helps or not, but a lot of schools are overflowing in certain areas because there is a shortage in that area. I just graduated in May and I know that all nursing schools are at their highest admission rate of nursing students but what you need to find is a school in an area that there's not a nursing shortage, like the midwest. I know no one wants to move to small town america but hey, it's usually cheaper and there aren't as many people waiting to take your spot! After gracuating, you can get your license in whatever state you want!

Hope this helps! :)
