My partner and I have been in a ltr for some time now, recently i discovered that he has issues with binge eating and purging. With our combined income we obviously do not qualify for financial aide, and unfortunately with the economy and bills we do not have health insurance. I have done lots of research on the subject and found several interesting factors, drinking brings on purging so that will be cut out, also depression is a major cause. I was looking into inpatient rehab, regardless how much I love him at this point we are not able to do this, Is it possible if the depression is treated, the drinking stops the purging may stop.I have looked into support groups and have found seceral thre the gay and lesbian center (we are a gay couple) close to us. Am I only causing more harm or is this worth a try? I appreciate all advise that is out there..

Binge eating & purging belong to a category of eating disorders for which your partner should seek professional help.

I am not expert in this manner, however worked in psychiatry for a number of years, and have had a little bit of experience dealing with these problems.

Eating disorders are treatable, there is an excellent one in Victoria BC Canada, I don't know if you could look into that with your partner or not.

Eating disorders often start at a very early age, and it may have been going on for some time.

Pressure on your partner may make him more secretive and there has to be some willingness to get help on his part.

I sincerely wish you both the best, no matter how much effort it takes to get better it is worth it.

Depression may be a component of the disorder and treatment of the depression should help.

I agree with the above poster - your partner needs professional help. Suggestions:

1. Low cost clinics in your area or the nearest big city.

2. If your partner is in active crisis (ie suicidal) seek care via the nearest ER.

3. National Eating Disorders Association

Your partner is lucky to have you in his corner. Take care.
