I am 9 weeks pregnant and have been on vacation for about 3 weeks now. On my last shift I noticed that my usually strong stomach was a little sensitive. The site of urine soaked tissue on the floor made me gag (I mean soaked- as if the man put the tissue on the floor and played target practice) I did not think much of it however!! Since then, the smell of someone passing gas, the site of stool in the public toilet that someone for got to flush all made me gag. :barf02:

I work on on a GI floor! I deal with a lot of.... pooh and bad smells. Any suggestions on how to over come all of this? It is not just the smell it is the site.

My patients, co-workers and myself thank you in advance!

All I can say is it usually gets better in the second trimester...Good luck!

Is it the sight of it or mainly the smells that seem to be bothering you?

I work med-surg in a very small hospital. During my first trimester, we must of had special on GI bleds. It was horrible, but I made it through. Hard to believe it's been over a year now.

OMG!..I'm laughing so hard because I'm 7 1/2 weeks pregnant and I can TRULY relate I have tears in my eyes..LOL!..not only that even restrooms anywhere like stores, at work etc..when those smells kick in my mouth waters and its over!..lmao!

A dab of Vicks vapo rub inside your nostrils might help, unless the smell of that makes you gag! It helps to take the edge off the smells.

Others keep mints in their pocket and put them in their mouth before they clean up patients.

Also, breathe through your mouth, and not through your nose.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Thanks for the replies. It is both the sites and smells. The stool in the toilet did not smell, but it did leave skid marks on the bowl as it flushed down, that was gross!

Mints are a good idea, I will try that.

I sure hope that the second trimester is better. I am so hungry and have a crampy stomach which both keep me awake most of the night. :jester:

Oh I feel for you..I can't believe it was over three years now, but with my last son, I had morning sickness thru the whole pregnancy. Everything made me gag. Cleaning dentures, cleaning residents after a BM, Colostomy Bags.. oh and those peppers stuffed with cheese..Still can't even look at those LOL. Sorry, I don't have any remedy..just letting you know I feel for you!

maraG, congratulations on your pregnancy & your new baby to come!! i hope this pukey stage passes very soon.

there's this product called migrastick, which i found in the healthfood store. it's a little roll-on to apply to your nares. i think it's made of peppermint & eucalyptus oils, etc. i used it when skydiving (would get a little motion sick & nauseated on the plane ride to altitude) and before going on stage under the hot lights. it never helped my migraines much, but definitely helped me feel less vagal & fainty-wainty.

could you wear a mask? or would that just make it worse? put a little cotton ball in there w/wintergreen?

& about the gagful sights part, what came to mind was singing or humming. that's what i do when i need to distract myself, usually in my head, but sometimes out loud if i can get away with it! it's cheesy, but i do use (among other songs) "my favorite things".... thinking about your using that particular song about a toilet bowl full of poop makes me snort.

best wishes to you. :heartbeat
