I Just Want To Scream!!!!!!!!

I am so tired of being in charge! Making sure everything runs smoothly, putting out fires all day, and still trying to get my work done. I want to be a worker bee for a change, just give me a task and I will do it with no problem! Just settled another dispute between co workers and I am tired of it. I work in a military medical clinic staffed with civilian nurses and military corpsman, and at times the relationship between the two can become quite disfunctional. Of course everyone knows that I am in nursing school, so when I make a decision that appears to benefit the nurses, the corpsman grumble, and when a decision that seems to benifit the corpsmans the nurses grumble. I manage about 30 people and I tell you its over rated! Ive been at my present unit for 2 years and am counting down the seconds until I retire. I manage the staff based on written policy and common sense and do not play favorites, but notice that if I allow it, I will be played by the nurses and the corpsman. At time I feel as if I am in a vise having the life squeezed out of me!!!!!!!!. I know that I shouldnt say this now as I am not yet a nurse, but I will be happy just being the worker bee as I need a break from management..

I feel ya. I was senior HM and had to make things happy between the two types as well. If there is only one individual on each side starting trouble, take them aside one at a time and discuss. If it's basically everyone, call a meeting and set them straight.

And if applicable, put the most senior nurse and most senior HM in charge of their people. They need to handle things at the lowest level and if things get crappy, they come to you. You handle the 'big picture', not micromanaging.

Make your expectations clear and pass off the authority, not responsibility.

In a military setting, you shouldn't have inmates running the asylum ever.

Handle this sooner than later. Best of luck! And once you exhaust these options and still have problems, take it up the chain for support. You are never alone!!!

I've not been in your situation, but do know that you have several buddies on this board rooting for you! Take care of yourself, and feel free to vent; sometimes that's all that's needed. Breathe, blow bubbles, take a hot bubble bath, get a pedicure, read a good book - do whatever it takes to restore your energy.

Hugs to you!

Smiles,

Kristi
