I am so excited because I just accepted an RN position in a level III NICU! It is my dream job. I am still in disbelief that I was offered this position fresh out of nursing school with no prior experience. I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity!

I start in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any recommendations to help me make the most of my time between now and starting, or my time during orientation? I am so excited and ready to learn and become the best RN I can be.

Thank you in advance for any and all recommendations!

I also was accepted onto a neonatal intensive care unit, and I'm excited yet anxious to start. It was also my dream job. Keep in contact in regards to your experience.

Thanks!

NICU is not easy...make sure you have a good, patient preceptor.

I am 1 month into my orientation and have two awesome preceptors. The unit has a week by week set of skills to work on, each week progressing in more complex neonates.

I just finished my third week on the unit and I feel like I have learned more in these three weeks than I learned in all of my university clinical experiences combined. With that said, I still barely know anything! The most important thing I have learned is that it's okay and expected to ask questions when I don't know something. All of the nurses on my floor are great about answering questions and explaining things; there are times when even the most experienced nurses ask questions. My floor works great together as a team, and I feel that is very important. I am excited to continue learning and advancing my skills.

I start my new position in the NICU next week! How is everything going so far?

I absolutely LOVE the NICU! I went to nursing school because I wanted to work in the NICU. I am having a great experience so far. At times I get very stressed because I feel that I can't keep up with everything, but my preceptor is very good about helping out if needed. I definitely am learning a lot very quickly, but there is so much to learn. I just started taking care of babies on ventilators. I sincerely love my job. Everyone on my floor works together great which definitely helps. I have finally been able to successfully put in IVs on these infants which was so exciting for me as it was nothing like putting an IV in an adult. I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

Congratulations on your new job! I will be starting in a Level 3 NICU in a few weeks and I can't wait. I've noticed the new grad support thread but, it seems like it's been abandoned now. Wondering if we could get a new one going or pick that one up. I feel like there is such a steep learning curve in NICU, would be nice to have a place to share/vent/ask questions for us 2015 newbies.

One question, do you guys really think buying the books are a must? I know my place does the NRP training in the first month, and I'm wondering if they will provide certain texts. I was looking at the Merenstein & Gardner's Handbook, it seems like everyone has given it good reviews.

I would love for another new grad thread to be started! I thought about starting one but wasn't sure how receptive others would be to it. It seems like there are quite a few of us who have either stated in the last few months or will be starting in the next month or so. I start tomorrow and think it would be great to have another thread that we can share tips and info in. Especially if anyone else is going to be on night shift! I'm typically an early to bed early to rise kind of person, so i know that transition is going to be rough on me. Can't wait to hear how everyone else is doing!

I have been orienting on days so far, but I will working nights after orientation. I will have a couple of weeks on nights during orientation also, and my first night shift is tomorrow night! I don't know how it will go as I usually go to bed early. Hopefully it goes well and I can adjust :) Congrats on your new job!

I will be working the PM shift (3-11p). Do they start your orientation in a classroom setting or do you just go directly to the floor?
