I have a job interview, but I don't want the job

So I graduated in December 2010 and just got my LPN license. I had my first job interview last week. It went awesome! Before I even went in for the interview I was told that the position I applied for was already filled, but they are going to hire some PRN in a couple of weeks. She said that if I was interested then I could come in for an interview. I did and it went great. I really want that job. The lady said that she would probably be calling me in a couple of weeks :-) Oh and the pay is awesome! 16.50/hr base pay for new LPN, +3/hr for PRN, +3/hr for nights, and +1/hr for weekends.

But here is the delimma...I also applied at a doctors office even though I really do not want to work in a dr office. I am single, no kids and living with my parents and I would rather work nights so that I can save up as much money as possible so I can to pay for RN school. The dr office called today asking if I was still interested. I told them "yes" even though I have absolutly no desire to work there. I just know that if I had that job that I would dread going in everyday. So I have the dr office interview tomorrow and I don't know what to do. What if they offer me the job? I really don't want it. A friend of mine from nursing school referred me to the job and I think that is the only reason I got the interview, because they know her and like her.

I just don't know what to do. Any advice??? Thanks

Lol all I can say is I wish I were in your dilemma!!!

Go ahead and do the the interview. Never turn down an opportunity before you find out more about it. You can always decline if you are offered the job after you've found out more information i.e. duties, environment, type of patients, paygrade, benefits, etc... You never know, you may just end up more interested than you thought.

Its awesome to have a choice of something better to choose from!! Most new grads have to take what they can get!

I would say go to the interview anyways, it never hurts to get experience interviewing! Plus with a PRN job, that is not a guarenteed schedule, so you may end up making more that the dr office in all then you would at the PRN job. It depends on how often they would need you, and you said that the interviewer said that she might be calling you in a few weeks. That isn't a total guarentee of a job. And even if you DID work at the Dr office, you could always take the PRN job as well and maybe pick up some shifts on weekends/holidays and have your foot in the door for if a full-time position opened up and then you could leave the dr office if you really wanted to. Just my ...g/l with whatever you decide!!! :)

Why not approach a job offer at the office with the thoughts of a personal time limit? Like when RN school starts, or when you reach 6 months, or 12 months? You don't have to let on to the employer that your only wish is to get some experience to put on your resume. Keep that your secret. You can still pursue a full time position at the place where you prefer to work. Have the best of both while you can. Good luck.
