I hate to say this, but I think it's true.....

I think alot of people are going into nursing these days because of the economy and the stories drilled in peoples heads about how nurses make alot of money for only a 2 yr degree. I can tell this by listening to students in my pre-req classes. Some whom I talk to don't have the slightest clue about nursing but they can spout off how much money they think they'll make when they first start out. I'm sure some of you on here will agree with me. I was talking to this one student and he told me, "Yeah, I'm going into nursing. I was a mechanical engineer and was laid off. I can't find work in that right now. Nursing is only two years. I made good money on my last job."

I feel very lucky that to now women havent made me that angry. When I started working I realized I had to quit drinking coffee or I would get stressed out. Now it is just another job.

Just stating facts. Like the job but not the environment and by the sounds of it, a lot of others feel the same.

No problem. Wasn't disagreeing, just commenting on my personal experience. Hope things work out for you in your new business.

yes, this is great here.

I have say that as an Asian-American, I have never experienced people hiring me because of my race or my gender. And I've held quite a few jobs over the years. I don't think the definition of "minority" in the U.S. includes Asians where job hiring or matriculation into schools is concerned. We just have to make do with what we have.

I came across this really cool blog post today:

http://magicbulletsaway.blogspot.com/2008/10/good-money-as-nurse.html

While our parents' generation might have had employers that would bankroll them for life and take care of them, corporations (including hospitals) are mercenary in their dealings nowadays. Nurses should be as well. That's just the way it is. If you don't take care of number 1, you can't certainly expect the corporations to.

I'd still like to see a salary poll segregated by state so everyone can get a bead on average salaries (not the inflated figures at Salary.com or some other site). Then, let the negotiations begin. Don't be shy. Get what you deserve or move on.

The money in nursing is pretty good, but let's face it, nursing is not a glamorous profession. There are less demanding careers that pay about the same or more.

I just spoke to my buddy last night who runs his CRNA company and he said the big money is going to change with the healthcare reform. He's working 16 hr days now and says he'll be out of it when the money stops-He's not going to work that hard for less money and I don't blame him. The one's who are becoming CRNA's for the money may be in for a rude awakening really soon.

They may not be totally disappointed. CRNA still provides more autonomy and job satisfaction for those who choose that route. The "big" money will change for all-but everyone will still get compensated for their higher education in some form. The Docs who specialize will get less-but still more than the Docs who do not specialize. And CRNAs will NOT receive the same salary as RNs-that's for sure. And why future NPs will be required to have a DNP is interesting as well-I don't think it's going to make NPs any richer. But my point is that, it seems like extra school is beginning to be a standard requirement for all programs. School programs are becoming more competitive and each have their own weeding out process. So those aiming for CRNA, Medicine, Dentistry etc for the money will have a rude awakening when they realize they CANNOT hang. Sad-but it happens ALOT.

We live in a generation where more people are taking extra strides to get their piece of the pie. That's just the way it is-money hungry or not. Now days, you're almost forced to obtain more schooling, certif., etc just to survive and keep up with the requirements and demands to be marketable. And it's worth it:D.

Until they are paired with a nurse who doesn't do her job

Blatantly doesn't do her job

Specializes in M/S, Travel Nursing, Pulmonary.

I ran into the "male nurses have an advantage" attitude at my first job. Everyone decided it was up to me to transfer their patients for them and talked and talked about picking up the slack for me in other areas. It never happened. Everyone would just send their aid to me to ask me to help with lifting and transfers.

I'll never forget, this one nurse would tell the transport people to find me and bring me with them so I could put her patients in the wheelchair for her. She was just "oh so busy and I have he has the time, everyone else helps him out." Never once were orders taken off for me, an admit done for me or anything. It was all take.

I finally started telling the aids that unless it was my pt., I'm busy find the nurse caring for the pt. They in turn got very upset because they wasted half their day bouncing back and forth between me and other nurses who didn't want to be bothered with the lifting. Come to me, I say "No", go back to the pt's nurse......they tell'em to ask again............I say "No". It was a mess.

I got called into the office, was told I wan not being a "team member". So I pointed out all the things she had listed on my review as things that needed work to be worked on. Taking off orders faster, getting meds passed faster (eh, yeah, pain meds) etc........

She got the point, since I was not getting the support I should have been getting while I did all the physical work for everyone else, my work was slipping elsewhere. She promptly redid my evaluation, gave me the full pay increase and left it up to me if I helped or not.

Now.......I'm very careful about who I do anything for and who I stand and watch drown. If I think you are lazy and just want things done for you...........you are on your own. I don't need you, you need me, so impress me with how this "team work" thing works and maybe I'll participate. Otherwise, we are islands apart from one another.

Sounds harsh, but if I am not that way........my patients suffer while I make everything easy for some nurses who only take from the "team".

That sucks, brother. But I'm glad you let them know where you stand. Our backs get hurt, too.

Amen brutha, been there and done that!!! I was the charge nurse one day and was constantly having to bail out this other female nurse who couldn't carry her load and still can't. She had an obese male pt.(I didn't make the assignment) that she started refusing to help(His size was a factor). She started dumping the load on me on top of my other 5 pts.-It was so busy, I couldn't do anything about it at the moment. Make a long story short, I hung the wrong antibiotic on my pt. because I was so busy taking care of hers-I got in a hurry(Pt. was fine). I got two days suspension w/o pay because the family caused such a stink!!!:mad:I tried to explain to my supervisor what happened and the other nurse didn't even get a slap on the wrist! That's just one of many examples. Yea, I'd spend all my time helping others but nobody was ever there to help me....Gee, what a surprise!!!!!
