Hmm, well, there is some in between here. There are the people just in it for a paycheck and then there are the mushy “calling” “passion” “this is my dream!” people, but a lot of us are somewhere in between. We are in it for the paycheck and see it as a stable career but then also enjoy the job and are empathetic towards patients and don’t mind changing diapers.

Yes, exactly. This is the best place to be in my opinion. The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. However, from my own experience, those who are solely in it to make money burn out quickly and don’t last very long in the field, or even in nursing school. I’ll always remember on my very first day of school our instructor went around the room and asked every person what made them want to be a nurse. There were four people that said money. None of them made it past the first semester. Nursing is not the only job in this world that pays nicely. You’ll struggle in school if you don’t have a passion for the career.

I don't understand -- your user name says you're a student, but you talk about how you have seen those who are in it for money burn out quickly and don't last very long in the field?

There are many of us posting here who have been in the field for decades, but went into it primarily "for the money." I found the course content interesting and challenging, and after decades at the bedside I still find the work interesting, challenging and satisfying. I know I am not alone.

Granted, going into anything JUST for the money is a bad idea, but I see nothing at all wrong with NOT having a calling or a "passion for the career." Passion isn't necessary and can indeed be faked. Being able to complete a difficult course of study and pass the licensing exam is necessary. Being able to think critically, learn from mistakes and master the particular skills required of your own specific job is necessary. Passion -- not so much.

You might be able to make $16 an hour as a Telemetry Monitor Tech.
