I am currently in Medsurg 2. My professor has told me that I am not properly doing a head-to-toe assessment. Also, I've been informed that my skills are not where they should be at as a second year nursing student. I've worked so hard to accomplish this dream of becoming a nurse but now I feel like all my hard work will just be for nothing. I am on the verge of failing clinical, I am afraid to ask questions during clinical. Previously when I've asked questions or was not sure on things my professor took that as me being unprepared or lacking skills. I am afraid if I seek help this will be another thing held against me. I really want to become a nurse but at this point feel as if its pointless. Im passing my class portion but struggling in clinical. What should I do? is it even worth it ?
I feel the exact same way that you do and I am in Med Surg 1. I began my med surg clinical on the 19th of this month. I felt like I was unprepared. Especially since the instructor already has her sights set on the ones who she likes best. I have been a CNA for 13 years and I am truly questioning if I even want to finish nursing school. I understand nursing school is difficult. However, in my 13 years I have found that the ones who do well in school only are nurses for the money. The ones who truly have a heart and passion for it are forced to quit or flunk out. Most of the time it is because of instructors. My only suggestion to you would be to practice your steps and run through the charting in your head. If you truly have a passion for it don't quit. If this school doesn't work out research other ones.

How do you figure that?
Are you saying that the only nurses out there are nurses who only do it for the money? Because by your reasoning, no one with a heart or passion ever gets to become a nurse.
Do you think any nurse who wants a paycheck can't possibly have a heart or passion?
Would you or any other person with a heart and passion still pursue nursing if you had to do it for free?
I'm not trying to be rude. I'm just trying to understand why you feel the way you do.
Seems to me that if someone had a heart and a passion for nursing, they would do whatever it takes to achieve their goal.
I don't even know that nursing instructors even know or care if one is doing it for the money or because they have a heart and passion. Instructors are looking for people who are able to be taught, meet learning goals and be safe. If a person has passion and a heart or would like a solid earning career-- or both-- AND can meet all requirements, they too can be a nurse.
I have pre sheet ready it will help you do complete evaluation. During clinical I use to have a nursing note **** I created And would use that to start my notes . I then just change what was needed according to my assessment!
What do you have on your presheet I am trying to prepare myself for next semester early? :)(Hoping and considering that I make it to next semester.)

Do you have a set rubric for your head to toe assessment?? If not, I think I have something that might help you..
edit: I just saw the update on what the main problem is here. How confident do you feel on your head to toe assessment? Could your professor possibly be right?
