I feel burned out on nursing school

Published

I'm in the second semester of my junior year in a BSN program, and it feels that no matter how hard I study, I am not able to learn and retain everything that is taught in my class. It frustrates me that I can never get an A on a test...I am managing B's and C's in my courses. I have a biology degree and this is frustrating to me. I would say that about 75% of the material I'm tested over is mostly BS nursing theory and does not have anything to do with being a real nurse on the floor. I have a lot of problems with the say nursing education is handled and a lot of it seems like a waste of time to me. Most people aren't going to retain a good bit of the material they were taught in nursing school. I would wager that most people learn more on the job than they ever learn in school. I know I will enjoy being a nurse but the entire educational process is frustrating and is leaving a sore taste in my mouth. I hope it gets better at the graduate level. Does anyone else feel my frustrations? I feel so burned out. I'm ready to be done with school, practice real nursing, start living my life and doing things I want to do, which I either don't have the time or money for right now, or I'm just too stressed to devote time to other things.

Every student in every type of school goes through a burn-out phase. Keep on trucking.

Oh boy..I absolutely can relate to several things in your post! It's good to know it's not just my college. It seems there are a lot of problems in nursing programs. :nurse:

Yes - I remember it well: 1/2 way through nursing school and burnt to a crisp. It was soooooo hard to stay focused and motivated. But if you leave 1/2 way through - what a waste of time! Better take a "tough love" approach with yourself and try to power through!! Also, to your other concern: YES, I can reoprt that it gets much better at the grad. level, at least it did for me! I'm very pleased I powered through it all! Good luck to you and all success...

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Before going in the program, my gpa was a 3.9. Now that I'm in the program it's IMPOSSIBLE to get an A for any of my classes! And I'm always stuck in the house because I either have to study or don't have the money to be going out. And if I'm not at home, I'll be at my job just so that I have some petty cash for food and gas. It really truly sucks. I've even talked to recent grads and they say more than half of the stuff you learn in school don't apply/stick to your head on your actual RN job...

Goodness this is exactly how I feel this morning. Exhausted! I'm counting down the weeks until spring break .. trying to look at the positives of having a test (or two) literally every week, care plans, NCLEX questions, etc. Having talked to students ahead of me, they said that my current semester is by far the hardest. I just want this semester to be over! Soon all the hard work and sleepless nights will be worth it. Hang in there everybody!!!

I'm burned out too, but just slogging through it. If you're like me and getting a BSN basically so you can earn a DNP or a PhD, there's really no other way around it. My primary focus has always been to become a nurse practitioner and the BSN is just something that needs to be done before I can do that, plus a few years' experience in acute care or ER.

But, yeah...extremely burned out. I am so sick of group projects and killing entire forests just to keep up with all the damned paperwork.

I have eight weeks left until I graduate and let me tell you, these are the dog days. I just want to be doing other things like being with my little boy and working out. It is taking every last bit of effort for me to do what is necessary for me to graduate. Sigh.........
