how do I break into Case Management?

Specialties Case Management

Published

Former ICU nurse looking to switch gears completely away from the bedside. Applied for several positions involving case management/UR with no call backs. Are these jobs hard to break into? Any recommendations on how to market myself? Take classes, that type of thing? It seems like all the case managers I knew were hired from in-house.

Any advice?

Check into utilization review as an entryway. Dont limit yourself to hospitals look into insurance companies/HMOs. Another big field that is opening up is disease management . I have done them all but returned to the hospital because I cant stand sitting down so long. When tou buff your resume stress care coordination and any d/c planning you helped with. Good luck.

thanks, I'll try doing some searches in UR.

the poster is right. it seems hard to break into this in the hospital but easier through an insurance company. i would start looking at jobs at monster.com also

I started as a home health nurse, they call us "case managers" but we are doing on hands care and yes, essentially managing all their care. I had an opportunity fall on my lap from one of my patients who had Medi-Cal and qualified on their waiver program, I was asked by him to be his "case manager" and after speaking to the nurse evaluator from medi-cal, I applied with the DHS, now I am starting my own home business doing this work from my office and computer. It entails making a visit once a month, preparing the paperwork and submitting it, and billing Medi-Cal. I am now starting to build my patient census and am looking into incorporating myself. DHS pays 2 hours/month per patient, most of the time is of course spent on the initial visit, then monthly you keep your own record of your visit in your records from then on. No hands on, but there are RN's who do both hands on and the case management as well. I have more than enough years of hands on care. I am looking for any other Nurses who do this waiver case management, is anyone else doing it? Virginia

Apply for work at an insurance company they are always looking for nurses. The pay will be less than a hospital but you will have a normal schedule.

It took me a while to get into it and I am sure you have more experience than me. Just keep trying, it will happen when you least expect it. Unfortunately, a lot do hire from in-house. But, I think your experience is priceless. Take whatever break you get and even apply for jobs that you may not want, it will at least get your foot in the door.

Good Luck!
