I am afraid to admit that I am a registered nurse!

Am I the only crazy one? I am afraid to admit that I am a registered nurse! I graduated from nursing school in May 2009. I passed my boards with 75 questions on my first try. But I have never worked as an RN. I know a lot of new graduates feel like they forgot a lot from nursing school, but I hate when friends and family call me up and ask me questions, because I know that I should know the answers but I don't. And I know that I knew the answers at one point, but I just don't remember. It's embarrassing.:imbar I feel like I cannot call myself an RN! I frequently ask myself "What did I learn in nursing school?" Am I the only new grad RN who feels like a failure, and is afraid to admit that I have a nursing license?

I do just that!! I get the evil eye, but they eventually ask their doctor!

lol they say "umm what did you learn?" and I think "hmm good question" lol. I had my first gig today - flu shots! I did 200, all on health professionals (hospital employee health office) and I kept forgetting to sign RN at the end of my signature on the paper. As silly as it is, just flu shots, I felt like a nurse by the end of the day:-)

I feel that way all the time. I just graduated in May '09, and I'm only just now (well, next week) about to start my new job.

Like you, I already feel like I've forgotten waaaayy too much info from school.

People ask me "medical questions" all the time. I usually DON'T know the answer, but manage to BS my way through it...ie, I just say something like "Well, it depends on...XYZ..etc..." lol.

It's embarassing for me too, but I guess I just keep telling myself that the only people I need to really worry about impressing will be my boss, and my patients :)

I think one thing that really boosted my confidence was when during precepting, I asked an ER nurse of 6 years a question about blood gases...I already knew the answer (I never had a problem with understanding ABGs), but I was just kind of wanting to get confirmation from her. Well, she had no clue...she even just blurted out "It's been too many years since I've been out of school for me to be able to answer that!" lol. And this was someone who I had (and still have) a lot of respect for. So I figured, if she can get away with not knowing even something simple like that, and still be a good nurse...then hopefully I can too :)

one phrase a good nurse (rn or lpn) learns quickly is, "i don't know but i'll be glad to find out and get right back to you with the correct answer." then do it!

sharpeimom:paw::paw:

i use that phrase about a 100 times a day.

I didn't personally feel like an RN until 3 things happened first. #1 I signed my name with RN for the first time, #2 I received my first paycheck as a RN, and #3 the first Doc asked me for advice/recommendations on a patient. :smokin:

I used to love signing my name with the RN behind it in big clear letters, now I scribble as small and terribly as I can so I cannot be easily identified lol. It is terrifying when you think about all the stuff you sign as a RN.

So I got a call today from an employer basically looking for the telephone advice nurses. He knows that I am a new RN fresh out of school. However, he seems to think I should interview and gain experience, but what experience is telephone nursing?? I understand that my pickings are slim as far as hospital jobs are concerned, so I don't want to limit myself and turn down an interview, but my mind is like this is not what I want to do as a nurse, at least not now. I did not come into nursing for the $$, BUT I cannot do nursing for free at this point because I am being bombarded by student loans. He is giving me some time to think about it, but I have to act fast, because he wants me to interview either tomorrow or Friday, and start on October 19 if I pass the interview. Anyone have any opinions??
