Hypothetical question

I have looked through the threads and have not found ANY thread with a question like this. I have a friend (really it is a classmate, but whatever ) who plans on applying to an ADN program for Fall 09 entry. Ok, I've been trying to convince her to apply to the BSN too, but she would need certain pre-reqs that would relegate her to Spring 10 entry for the BSN. Could she theoretically *start* the ADN program and leave if she gets accepted in the BSN program? Is this possible. Her main conern is to get in ASAP, but has career aspirations that would necessitate the BSN.

So, basically, could someone start and ADN program while the BSN application is being reviewed and essentailly withdraw from the ADN program if accepted??

Sure, why not? All she is out is the tuition. These schools do not know that you have applied to other places unless you have told them. And people drop out of programs all the time for some reason or another. You are not going to get arrested or be forced to stay in a program. You will, however, lose the money you paid for tuition and textbooks.

also, she would be out of the time spent in classes. While she may gain valuable knowledge, this may not be the best use of it. Also, is she actually interested in the BSN program or is she ambivalent or is it just a matter of 09 vs 10?

She is planning on getting the BSN (and eventually MSN) in the long run. She plans to do ADN-BSN-MSN. This, I argue is lengthier, but in terms of competitiveness, the BSN program is more competitive and she may not get in (at least on the first try and she is very eager to start her Nursing schooling). Therefore at least she has started on the ADN and will not further delay it in the event of not getting into the BSN program.

Hrm. I suggest apply for the ADN and to as many BSN programs as possible to increase her chances of getting into the BSN. She should just apply and hope for the best without spending too much time worrying about how competitive it is - its usually not productive to do this. Good luck to both of you! I hope she gets into the BSN :nuke:.

One thing for her to consider is that getting an ADN first has a few advantages:

* She can start working as an RN in 2 years as opposed to 4, and see if she really likes the field before she invests more time/money into advanced degrees

* After getting through the ADN program, she may decide that she's not ready for the BSN right away (or even at all), and so can take a break for as long as she likes before going for it

* She may be able to find an employer who will spring for part/all of the BSN

* I think most RN to BSN programs are only a year or two, so it's not like she'd have to put another four years in on top of the two she did for her ADN

Sure she can start it and withdraw if she makes the BSN program: she'll be out the money and time though, but if she's fine with that then there's no reason she can't do it.
