Husband of travel RN with a few questions

My wife is a travel nurse working in florida, and we travel together because I never really had any type of career to keep me grounded. We have a tax home in our home state (Maine). When I apply for jobs here, does it matter what address I put on my application? I dont want to have to work through a temp agency, but nobody will hire me knowing that I will only work for 12 weeks. Also, if I do get hired, how do taxes get taken out of my pay? Do they get taken out for Florida even though I have a tax home elsewhere? Are there certain jobs that are more suited for travelers? There must be husbands or wives of travelers who have experienced this uncertainty.

None of you have working spouses?

Taxes get taken out for Florida only for federal, etc, as they do not have state income tax. Taxes are taken out for work done where you are, not for where your tax home is. You normally only pay taxes in your home state, if they are earned there within their borders. When you file your taxes, you will need to include a form for each state that you worked in.

Best suggestion that I can make is for you to speak to your tax advisor on this.

It is hard for any company to hire anyone for only a few months, so you can see if there is some contract work available for a short time or is there something that you can do at home, while you are on the road for a longer period of time. Not all jobs require that you be at an office.

Thanks! I Used to do my own taxes, but I'm definitely going to H+R block this year.

Make sure that you get someone that is used to doing returns for travel nurses...................or you can be spending alot more than is needed.:)

That would be hard for a working spouse. I talked to a traveler the other day who said it wasn't too hard for his wife because she is a waitress. I guess if the spouse worked for a chain like AppleBee's...it still would be hard. What kind of work do you do?

sales, construction, general labor type jobs.

The suggestion is that was made here, as the answer given is not entirely correct. There are states, such as Virginia, that base your state income tax on the amount of your Federal Income. Meaning, whether you worked in your state of resident or not, you will be required taxes on all of the income you earned.

Mine has a job as the "Health Care Support Team" ie... house hubby who travels with me and takes care of the house.

My son, on the other hand, works at fast food restaurants and earns pretty good money on the side. He has gotten several seasonal jobs also at different places we have done to, working mostly in restaurants.

My suggestion would be to NOT tell them that you're going to be there only for 13 weeks, because you never know, the wife might renew her contract, and you'll be there for 26 weeks. BUT, I would be sure to give them two weeks notice, and I would think that you should be fine.
