Humber College Second Entry (2015)

Published

Figured I would start this thread so we can get some discussions going. I'm starting the Humber Second Entry program this September (2015). Pretty excited, also a bit worried about this 74% cut-off.

Who else is going to join me in the craziness of this program??

Thank you for the information!!

1. Which hospital did you do your pregrad where they were laying people off?

2. What are your best tips for the prep semester? I have to take 4/5 (no psych) courses and it's a little intimidating from what I've heard.

Hey annapk,

Sorry I am late responding to this! I just wrote the NCLEX yesterday so I had sequestered myself to study for the last little while.

I'm not comfortable naming specific hospitals and such on the internet. However, many of my peers have encountered the same issues at various hospitals in the GTA. It really depends on the hospital and what their staffing and costs are like. I don't think there is much of a way to predict that ahead of time, and you don't really get THAT much choice as to where you go anyway.

For the prep semester I had to take anatomy, micro, and patho. I love the science courses and they're mostly memorization that leads to comprehension. Getting a really good foundation in those classes (especially anatomy and patho) will help you with all of the diseases you will continue to learn about. Patho can be the hardest because they expect you to already know about the physiology, which you may not if you're taking anatomy at the same time.

Really I just went to every class and then rewrote my notes out after the classes into my own note style (that's just how I prefer to study). Going over them after class or at the end of a week like that helps to firm up the knowledge in your mind that you learned in class.

I also had a friend that I studied with for exams. We would do our own studying for a while and then we would meet up and review all the content together and do some teaching/questions/etc. In one of the study rooms at the library (those are great, you just have to book them online and it will be a quiet space to study with someone on campus).

I did not find the semester that hard. However, I studied a lot and had already taken a full year anatomy course, and a principles of disease course, and some other related science courses that helped me. Most people made it through the prep semester and as long as you study a lot you should too!

From my professor that I still keep in contact with (if she is still teaching complex when you have it you will be lucky!) the students in the second summer of the program are STRUGGLING hard right now because of how they changed the program to make it even more compressed. So just making sure you're developing really good study habits now is important to protect you when **** hits the fan after the prep semester!

I've heard mixed things about registering for classes, for our Prep Semester. Has anyone heard any updated info??

I had been told in Humber it should be about week or two before the calsses.

For most semesters you get your information about 4 days before you are required to select classes/placement.

You should expect that this program will be a little later in doing things than you are typically used to from your first degree. Part of that is because of the difficulty in finding enough clinical spots. Not sure why your prep semester would be delayed lol.

Just got an email about the Orientation. Sept 2 at 10am

@relizabeth

Much appreciated your input about the program. I was going to PM you through the forum but I don't have the feature unlocked yet.

So I was wondering if you still are looking to sell your textbook/notes/past exam questions etc..

Can you perhaps give us a list of textbooks and their corresponding course name?

I have tried looking up on kijiji but almost every sellers did the 4 yr program, so I can't be sure.

Hey guys, I am going into the 2nd entry nursing this September and I am wondering if any of you can comment on the program so far. I have a science degree and I am only taking 2 courses (Pathophysio and microbio) for the prep semester so I am not so worried about that. I am more concerned about the program from January and onward.

How are the nursing courses and how are they evaluated?

Are there many essays, presentations, discussions, group work, etc?

How is the workload? Do you think it is manageable with a part-time job/workstudy?

Is there anything I can do to prepare ahead of time?

Any feedback on the programs and suggestions would be very much appreciated!! :)

Hey everyone, I hope everyone in this post did well at Humber and have all gotten their degrees :). I'm starting this year and although my chances of getting a reply from this thread are very slim, I thought I would try anyways.

Would someone suggest any tips on how to do well in the program. Anything that they wished they'd known earlier before starting Humber nursing (so that way I can better prepare myself) and also stuff to watchout for (profs, certain courses, clinicals). Some mistakes they wish they hadn't made in the program and overall their experience at Humber.

Also, are their any scholarships for students who do well? Any comments on the difficulty for the Prep semester. I'm a third year lifesci from McMaster.

I probably won't have a life will I, once the program kicks in? ( not that I do now anyways :p)

Thank you!
