Hello everyone,

So the CC I'm attending has a TON of classes that meet the requirement for the humanities elective I need as a pre-req. Here is the list:

ARTS 1301: Art Appreciation

ARTS 1303: Art History I

ARTS 1311: Design I

ARTS 1316: Drawing I

DRAM 1310: The Art of Theater

DRAM 1351: Acting I

DRAM 2361: History of the Theater I

MUSI 1306: Music Appreciation

MUSI 1310: American Music Studies

PHIL 1301: Intro. to Philosophy

PHIL 1316: Biblical Religions: Their History and Literature

PHIL 1317: Intro. to Christian History and Thought

PHIL 2306: Ethics

PHIL 2374: Critical Thinking

I'm going to be taking my humanities elective during a 4-week summer semester. Has anyone ever taken classes similar to these? Does anyone have any recommendations of what I should take that will be easy and interesting?

I've heard a lot of people who say that these classes aren't as easy as they seem. They would take art or music appreciation and end up failing them.

I was told by my advisor that the critical thinking class was a good elective for nursing students...

I was thinking the same thing.

I just didn't know if this would be one of those classes that was too hard to take during the summer. I just want to make an "A."

We didn't have critical thinking as an option. I took Art Appreciation in the Summer, online. It was a breeze. The hardest part was a paper that we had to write, I totally didn't understand how to do it and completely bombed it but because my other grades we good, I still passed with an A.

Well, I've spent some time thinking about it and here's what I've come up with so far (someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Since I am taking this in a summer semester, and I will be burnt out bad by this point because this semester is totally killing me, it seems like Critical Thinking may not be the best bet. I just imagine having to read a 10-page article and having to precisely analyze it to the point that I could imagine what the author looks like or something. (I know, a bit of an exaggeration.)

So at this point Critical Thinking is out, unless anyone else has taken and can tell me what it was like. Philosophy also, for the same reasons: I have no doubt that I am capable of thinking on the philosophical level, but I'd really rather not do it during a summer semester.

I suppose I'll look into art or music appreciation and ask people which they enjoyed better/which is easier. I was in band for 6 years and we learned some history so maybe music appreciation.

I took "introduction to ethics" and found it very interesting. If you like history at all, you might find it interesting. We covered everything from Plato to terrorism all in one class so it was a mixture of material and was never boring! :)

yea i'm taking critical thinking right now and it hurts my head for an hour and fifteen minutes twice a week!! :rolli do enjoy the class though, but if you want painless/easy, i wouldn't chose that course.

good luck

i've always enjoyed history. it does seem like quite a broad spectrum was covered in your class. i will look into ethics as an option.

i think i would enjoy the class too, and i would probably take it if i felt i could commit the time/thought/studying required of the course. right now, i'm doing good to earn my "a" in fresh. comp., a&p i, gen psych, and growth & development. i figure that these are more important to nursing than any ethics, philosophy, or critical thinking class. i mean, when i'm a nurse and my patients starts to crash, i probably won't think back to a critical thinking course i took.

in other words, i definitely see how it could benefit me, but i guess i can take one blow off class. hell, we all deserve a break every now and then, right?
