The application process hasn't even started yet but I didn't even find out about last year's scholarship until a couple days before the deadline. I did get my application in on time but was not fortunate enough to be a recipient. I intend to apply again for the upcoming scholarship. Any tips from those that were accepted? My EFC is 0, I'm in an undergraduate program, and my GPA is 3.4.
WOW.................I may not agree with everything cccumings said, or how it was said at first with the whole common sense statement, but I do agree that SOME people get into this for the wrong reasons, and not fully understanding the commitment it means. You have to go in this with the expectations that you may very well have to relocate in order to fulfill your obligations. It was said quite a few times in the past years, and in this years discussion as well. (remember when the people who did the seminar were posting things that was said)
I took it like Cummings was saying people shouldn't act shocked when everything is said done and they find there isn't anything in their area where they want to work, or can work. There is no guarantee you will find something in your area, and they tell you that. So if you are unable to relocate at all for whatever reason, no you shouldn't do this because it's a very real possibility.
Others may have very well taken offense to the persons post about how there's nothing in their area, and to not sell your soul for the money. Who' says everyone is in it JUST for the money to begin with? Or how you will be limited in your career because of this, when you can work at a variety of places. it's not necessarily because of the scholarship you may not get your dream job. Many people don't get their dream job right out of school. You have to take what you can get for now and gain the experience. I don't think that's specific to getting this scholarship, and working in a shortage area. That's one person's plight, not everyone's. Plenty of people who got this scholarship and had no problem getting jobs in their areas. Of course there are always exceptions and different circumstances.
I understand that things can be said by people and things can be taken the wrong way, which leads to even more conflict. It seems like for everything a person says on here, there's some form of rebuttal or backlash from people because they don't like what was said, or how it was said, or took it wrong. That's something we all have been dealing with, and will have to deal with our entire lives.
And with that being said... I think this will be my last day partaking in this ridiculous UN-constructive blog. I have never been part of a blog/discussion group full of people who are so incredibly negative and debasing to others. Perhaps if one doesn't 'like' or 'agree' with another members comment/s and cannot be nice (yes, I'm bringing it down to that level)...it would be "common sense" to simply keep your comments to yourself. This is one of the first lessons in life I had to teach my seven year old.
Yes, I know...practice your own preach, as I am doing exactly the opposite right now. I am only saying this because that is not the first time the "common sense" comment has come up in this blog. Living daily life is stressful enough and having someone make senseless comments about ones intelligence is completely ridiculous and uncalled for.
emdrn74 - I am sorry that you were obviously insulted for your comments.
jtboog2003 - I really like your way nice and appropriate way of redirecting things. Other members of this blog should take note.
Good luck to all with your careers. I wish everyone the best.
I knew I'd get a reaction like that...I am a nurse after all and attitudes like that are rampant in this field. I am not in the least bit offended. Anyway, I was only sharing my personal experience and perhaps a little comfort to those who DO NOT get the scholarship. I noticed a bit of desperation in many of the posts and I just wanted to reach out and let you know that you just might be better off.
Someone said this to me once...
When we ask God for something he has three answers for us. I always have to remind myself of this when I start getting squirly.
1) YES!
2) Not now...
3) I have something better in mind:)
BTW, if I was doing it for the money I'd have chosen a different profession! LOL! We do not get paid anywhere near what we're worth!
Listen there is nothing negative being said about anyone! The point is that especially if you are planning on being a nurse and details are the difference between life and death, you should be detail oriented, and know what you are getting into. A lot of good people worked hard to make it to this point and are counting on this, and they are not selling out professionally. Nor is the scholarship a loan, unless you plan on defaulting on your service contract (then that says it all). I know all types of people that were applying for this scholarship because they just wanted the money, and just because you are a nurse does not mean that you are a good person either. There are people out for themselves in every walk of life and profession. Just as others posted to comfort those who do not get it, I would like to make the importance of this scholarship clear. That way those who do not plan on keeping their service commitment or feel they can't will walk away now and leave those funds for someone who will gladly help those that need them, anywhere in any situation.
I do not want anyone to take anything personally because I did not mention anyone. Again the point is this, if working in a hospital or clinic that is not your ideal or dream situation for two years is upsetting then don't apply. We all knew that could happen! I want to save lives, and comfort those who need it like my little brother who died of cancer at 18.I do not care if I have to work in a hospital that truly needs me, in return for getting my education. I do have strong opinions and appreciate others opinions as well (even if I don't agree). We are all adults and need to act like it, not everything is negative or a personal attack. Just honest!
I wish the best to ALL! Congratulations to the rest of you that were awarded the scholarship! And to all of you holding out hope, keep doing so, and if you don't get it this year reapply next year. I know that there are intelligent, hard working, dedicated people who truly want to make a difference in the lives of others and don't care about the venue they do it in!! To all of you keep working hard, and I know you will make a big difference in the world!!!
Congratulations on receiving the scholarship and on graduating!! I am glad nothing was being taken personally because my comments were not directed towards you. Just in general to all the people who want to bring down others hopes and who don't care enough to pay attention to the details. When you write something out it never is the same as speaking, and I am glad you have thick skin and can read through the lines. Again all my best to you, and good luck in your career!
Hey everyone!
I am thinking of applying for the NSP for the next cycle. However, I do not have a EFC of 0. Unfortunately, it is much higher due to my parent's income. I am wondering if I should even put the effort in to apply if I do not have a chance... I am an AmeriCorps alumni, volunteered in Africa in the health centers, and also attend school in one of the most poverty-stricken cities in America, where I often volunteer with low-income minorities. I have a decent GPA of 3.4, but my EFC is around $5,600. However, my family doesn't actually contribute ANYTHING because I have 10 siblings (many of which still live at home). If I have no chance of getting the NSP, does anyone have any other suggestions as to where I could apply?
Thanks for all your help!
Are you living at home? If not, I think there might be a way for you to be considered "independent" if you really are supporting yourself 100%. Just don't lie :) Make an appt with ur fin aid officer and ask them. I got mine 6 yrs ago, and the main criteria then was EFC=0. Plain and simple. None of the other stuff was even discussed quite frankly. I just filled out the paperwork and sent it in and forgot about it. Things seem to be different now. From what I gather ur EFC is the deciding factor regardless of any volunteering. Doesnt Americorps offer scholarships? What about working as an aid or unit sec at one of the city hospitals. They often offer scholarships in return for service or they pay back part of your loans. Have you considered Navy Nurse Corps or any of the other Public Health options? Indian Health Services etc. If you're a BSN student the armed forces offer some really nice options but it's up to where you see yourself in a few yrs. These contracts can strangle you later. If you can make it while living at home and are attending a state school you should be fine with loans. Just be really careful, sell ur books back, ask for a work study campus job, use a budget etc.
Hi! Your EFC doesn't have to be 0 exactly, they just tend to give the scholarship to what is called the First Funding Preference first. This is people who's EFC is from 0-5550. They consider these people to have the most "need" for the schoarship. As of right now, you just miss the mark for the first group, but you never know what will happen with your EFC or the requirements next years when you actually are ready to apply.Your stats look good to me, those are the kinds of things they are looking for. I say apply: you never know what might happen if you apply, but you definitely won't receive it if you don't even put your application in to be considered.Hey everyone! Last year all finalist were notified on the same day. It seems to be the same thing this year. Everyone was notified on 8/3/12. I don't know if I believe that they are still notifying applicants. I am debating if I should drop 2 classes of just try to pay out of pocket. I called HRSA but they are just reading a script. Not sure if I am getting the truth. Oh well, congrats to everyone that recieved the notification. I'll try again next year.

And it's funny how it's only a few subscribers on here that always come off as rude, know it sells and negative! Being mean will get you know where in life especially if like you say " we're here so service and help those in under served communities" an attitude check wouldn't be a bad idea before you get into your field! again congrats to all who received scholarship and good luck to those waiting this will be my last post!
