HPSP VA Nursing Scholarship 2019

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone! I was recently told I was selected for the HPSP Nursing Scholarship for nursing students. Apart of this scholarship I will have 100% of my tuition paid and cost of living paid. In exchange for this I will have to work for the VA for a minimum 2 years (with the possibility of relocation). My question is has anyone who received this award have to relocate or were you able to stay in the area?

Have anybody heard anything, I received an email saying that I’m on the alternative status?!

OK, well at least we are on the alternative list. I wish us well!

I was also placed on the alternate status list for the BSN scholarship... any idea if past alternate list students were actually awarded the scholarship?

The VA is trying to get everyone to BSN, that being said...this is because of budget. The fiscal year starts in october so thats why this timeframe. I didn't get my first few classes paid for of my MSN but did get it when the next fiscal year started...this looks good for you. If it's anything like my VA (probably is) make sure you find out if you need to resubmit your request for the next fiscal year. I had to do this and it's best to do it now!

I have been accepted into the HPSP program for my BSN. I am entering my senior year of college. Does this mean only my senior year will be covered in tuition, plus stipends? OR are all four years of college paid for with tuition reimbursement?

Additionally, how does location for job assignment work? Can I pick a specialty?

Do they pick my location/region and then I pick the facility I want to work at in that region?

I think this means they will only pay for the senior year and that's it. If you had applied the beginning of school then all 4 years would be covered. You cant pick your specialty at first but later on once you begin working you can. The location, you pick 3-5, and then the VA picks. However, what I do recommend is if you want to stay in the area you are now, contact your local VA Nurse Recruiter and ask to become an SNT (Student Nurse Tech) and when they give you this position, they can convert you to an RN once you pass the NCLEX.

Thank you @Kirsten81774 I appreciate your guidance!

Did you complete the program?

Are there are list of locations/hospitals you can go? I would like to take a look at it now.

Yes, I did complete it in December 2021. There is a list however it changes every month. Some locations include Chicago, California, West Virginia, Maine, Rhode Island, etc. However, I am in Washington, DC.

That is terrific to hear! I commend you! Do you typically start off med surg, critical care, ER? Or can you jump into psych nursing? (If you couldn’t tell that is my thing haha).

One more question, how soon after graduation (Spring semester) did you find out about your placement? What timeline can you expect?

thank you for your guidance (-:
