I am a nurse from US with a valid NMC pin. I am having difficulty finding employment in Aberdeen, Scotland. My experience is in A&E but I have applied for a couple of jobs with the NHS in different areas. How long does it take the NHS to get in touch with you about an interview? How long does the hiring process take? IS it a new fiscal year in the NHS right now?
I thought about going with an agency called Adevia but I hear such bad things about them. They are the only agency that I know of in this area that can do contracts.

Unfortunately, it is a dismal time right now with regard to getting hired as an RN in the UK, not just for foreign nurses, but for UK trained nurses also. There is a lot of talk of redundancies and I know of several nurses who are nearing the end of their training who have been told there will be no jobs for them when they qualify
I have just recently resigned from my job and there are no plans to replace me. This seems to be the trend now in the NHS.....a nurse resigns and his/her post doesn't get advertised. I guess they just think "oh great, that's another salary saved" .....sorry to sound so cynical, but how else are we to think? It used to be you had to give a month's notice to give them time to find a replacement.....now it's becoming the norm for the Trusts to tell you that you don't need to work a month's notice, you can leave whenever you like.
Any suggestions? I don't mind doing something else. Damn seems like the pay is better in most proffessions in scotland. Are you now?

Why not try the private sector? If you google Bupa or Nuffield, maybe you could speak to someone about their recruitment procedure. Just a shot in the dark, but you never know, it's worth a try.
Good luck :)

Hi there,
I to am on the move from near Aberdeen to the USA and one of the reasons is what I describe as "dead mans shoes" in my hospital the only way to get up the career ladder or move wards is to wait till someone retires or dies its awful!!!!
Also unfortunately there is a big redundancy drive on uk nurses right now due to the lack of nhs funds as usual. I would try the private sector for jobs also.
It does take ages for hospitlas to get back to you but in general if you have not heard back from 3 weeks of the closing date you have not got an interview they dont let you know they got your application or if you are unseccessful for interview, you only hear if you get an interview. After the closing date interview is generaly 2 weeks later and hear that day or the next if you got it. The longest wait is to get started the law now requires a full police disclosure which can take up to 12 weeks to come back and you are not allowed to start your job till it is back.
I wish you good luck in your job search the biggest tip I can give you is if you are going to apply to a hospital or ward go phone and arrange to go visit prior to interview. You have to remember here in scotland often 5 of the people going for the job are on temporary contracts in the hospital already so the hirer knows them well and all they have to judge you on is a 30 min interview if they havent met you to get a feel for your personality before hand.

I qualified in Aberdeen in 2004 and had to move to Newcastle for a job. One of the reasons was that the university there churns out aprox 300+ new nurses every year and does not have room for all of them.
Why don't you contact British Nursing Agency, I worked for them a while and when they get to know you... it is possible to earn quite a tidy sum.

If you go to www.jobs.scot.nhs.uk you can search for jobs - there only appear to be bank or relief roles right now on their web pages - or Sisters posts in the transfusion centre. Have you tried emailing them?
This web page http://www.staffnurse.com/nursing-directory/categories/nursing-agencies-scotland-946.html mentions a few agencies. Hope these help
