I do SANE through my ER and get paid to be on call with 1.5 times my hourly if I get called in. I've heard of ind. contractors but they're generally (in my experience) run by private organizations. The woman who did our SANE classes works in this way but she's in California and I in Pennsylvania. There's a center that's basically rape crisis center and they are called when a patient shows up to the hospital or police station. They have their own offices and exam rooms and don't need hospital space which I found interesting. She's also been doing this since the 80s.
I realize that this is an old post, yet wanted to add my 2 cents. I have been a SANE (FNE) in my current program since 1990. I have never worked for the hospital. We are all considered to be independent contractors. Our director is the ED manager and as much has some hours added into her regular schedule for administrative work, yet like us, she is a contractor for call and case pay. We are grant funded, with that grant administered by our local rape crisis center.

Is there such thing as a SANE nurse working as an independent contractor providing services to hospitals that hire them or are all SANE nurses employees of some capacity in one hospital.
If there is such a thing as being an independent contractor, who pays you?
Thanks!
