It seems like the more one tries to stay away from negative co-workers the more they flock to you. I hate a majority of my co-workers. Some of them feel entitled because they have been there so long. The unit I work on is very clicky. I thought I was hired to work, not be around caddy, backstabbers, throw under the bus, run to the manager, think they know it all, and lazy people.
If you are having such a problem with "negative coworkers," please stop and consider what it is that YOU are bringing to the table. Frankly, it is not healthy to "hate" a majority of your coworkers. Surely there must be something about each of them to like, respect or admire. Instead of dwelling upon how much you hate your coworkers, spend some time looking for something to LIKE about them, and dwell on that.
If your unit is cliquey, the reason is possibly, at least in part, that they sense that you neither like nor respect them. One's instinct is to stay away from people whom one thinks do not like them. Therefore, if you behave as if you LIKE your colleagues (easier if you find something to like about them), they may become more open to liking you.
By, the way, I think the words you were looking for were "cliquey" and "catty."
