How is prior military time accounted for?

I must also add that I was enlisted E-3 in the Air national guard.

your 6 prior years will only count for a reserve retirement, if you are going for a AD retirment the points will count but not the years. The 6 years will count for pay, so if you are going in as an O1 it will be O1 over 6 not an O1 under two which would be roughly $700 a month difference.

Time in service is not equal to time in grade. Your ANG time will not equal 6 years unless you are 6 years active duty ANG... otherwise you take your days of service and add em up to find time in service as a fraction of a year - which unless you were activated will be well under 2 years.

Ok. Thanks for the information. I think that it would add up to six months. But I just want to be clear on what you are saying.... The six months( or whatever it adds up to) does contribute to my time in service right? Point of clarification, does time in service mean count toward promotion. For example, I was told that the average time for promotion from 01 to 02 is about 18 months approx. Does my six months experience allow me to get promoted sooner than 18 months? I am slightly confused on this.

No it would not count as 'time in grade'. That would either require previous time as a 2lt or perhaps you were a nurse for x of years and there is a reg of transferring prior nurse service specifically to a given amount of time in grade as a nurse officer.

The 2lt to 1lt time is pretty much 18m as a current standard and will come about automatically. I'd say embrace the time and learn during 2lt and 1lt years.. they can be a great time!

The 18 months for promotion to 1LT could be shorter if they give you constructive credit. When you go active your PEBD would be adjusted to include your time in the ANG. Like I stated in a earlier post your enlisted time will help in the "step". PEBD is not just based on active but reserve time too. You where a E-3 over 6? If you where when you go active you will be a O1 over 6. This is from personal experience plus I worked in admin. in the Navy as enlisted with 15 years & I am now a Army officer. When I transfered I came in as a O1E over 14 for pay. Good Luck and welcome to the fold.

My time in the Navy was between active and reserve, with 11 of it in the reserves.

I am a 1LT with prior service years as an E-3 before I comissioned. All my time has been served in a reserve capacity. I can tell you from experience that even though you may have been in reserve status, the years will count towards your pay. As explained before, they will not count for time in "grade", but they wont take time off your years of service. There will be a difference in your retirement, going from reserve to active. Reserve retirements are based on points. They have a formula to calculate the points from reserve to what your appropriate active time is. If you come in with any exprerience, they have a way they calculate that to add to your time in grade.
