How prevalent is e-MAR out there? Are you

A few units at my hospital have started using it. My unit is supposed to start in a month or so. I too was wondering about having to roll the cart down the hall in the middle of the night for one dose of tylenol or something similar. Also, I have a lot of foot pain ~ right now, with the system we have, I can get my meds ready sitting down beside the cart, and then head out to give them and cut down somewhat on the time I have to stand. My feet hurt horrible when I have to stand ~ if I can keep moving it is not so bad. So, I am wondering how I will fare this change.

because it does involve A LOT MORE standing.

I've used emar, Bridge system. Liked it. Last two contracts have had computer documentation of assessments-like that too. Current contract has all orders entered in computer, like a total computerized chart. Orders can be accessed from any computer on unit. They did have documentation of meds on computer, but back to paper MARS as they tweak the system. Daily physician progress notes are on paper. All nursing documentation in computer. Best part about stuff on computer is that I don't have to decipher a physician's scrawl. Also no more hunting down charts. This facility also has computerized scheduling, called "Active Staffer" so that I can submit a schedule from home on my computer. When the schedule is finalized you can also access it on-line from home. Real Cool.

That sounds cool. We do everything on the computer, but it's odd. The physician's orders are not on the computer. Who puts the orders in?

The physicians put their orders in the computer. Nurses are not encouraged to take verbal orders (which would mean that we'd have to enter the order in the computer) unless there's an emergency or the docs at home. Since we're back to paper MARs the unit clerk transcribes the med orders onto paper for us and then we check it.
