How are practicing CRNAs Fighting for our profession??

money to the aana is not the only way to get involved.

1. get involved at the state and local level. join your state association, as a new grad you will automatically be joined, it's up to you to keep current.

1a. this means writing letters when asked, showing up at state legislature meetings and meeting with state reps. making phone calls when asked, and yes providing money to fund the cause.

2. tell anyone when given the chance or asks what it is you do, "i provide quality safe anesthesia in all healthcare settings" etc. equal to any other provided out there."

3. lead by example and be the best advocate for your patients as possible.

4. encourage bright nurses with a desire for a future in anesthesia and mentor them, let them shadow when possible. again lead by example.

5. attend national aana meetings, network with crnas, get a feel for what is going on at other state levels as this is usually where things get rolling on the national scene.

6. this is just my feeling, but dont get involved with mdas you work with in a bickering nature of who is better. always be the professional. that is not to say dont stand for what you believe but express your feelings in a professional manner.

that's all that comes to mind right now.

you're not the only one checking out SDN...i won't say what they've said, but it's not just on the topic of CRNA's ...just do a search on "nurses and doughnuts" :madface:

I was surprised that the most vocal opponents of CRNA's were so crass, desperate and immature sounding. I know I shouldn't be surprised, but still, I was shocked.

And the grammar and spelling? Atrocious. Typos are one thing; not understanding how to spell "rediculous" is quite another. All of the bolding and increased font size was surprising as well. Are they collectively 12?

By the way, you and a few others have done a great job informing the med students.

Anyway, I want to quote our fellow member CRNA DNSc r/t this thread. The post was a list of things to do after you graduate:

"1. Start your new job

2. Go to a state meeting and volunteer for a committee

3. Donate to the AANA Foundation to help the students that are following after you.

4. Donate to CRNA-PAC to help fund the fight to preserve practice rights at the federal level. Donate to your state PAC to fund the fight at the state level.

5. Be a clinical and/or didatic instructor as a way of honoring those who taught you.

6. When your AANA dues notice comes- PAY IT! IT's the best bargain for the profession.

7. Spend your CE dollars wisely- use some to support your state orgainzation, some to support schools-don't send it all to the MDs.

8. When you get a ballot (state or national AANA) vote, if you don't know all the candidates find someone who does and listen to them or at least vote the races you know.

Always remember the Anesthesia Pioneers that fought year after year to get us where we are today. Honor the past, contribute to the present, and build for the future!!!!! Always remember you are part of a profession built on caring for patients and not just working a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

P.S. Remember the time when some of them actually gave you thumbs up on your rebuttal? That is one thing that I love about allnurses - the great "smileys" :thankya: :Reindeer: The SDN just can't cut it in that dept!

Thanks Ether for the citation, I glad I wouldn't have to type it again but it's just as important for the new grad as the CRNA who's been practicing 20 years!!:) :) There is something for everyone to do and everyone should do something to support the profession so that the profession can continue to support each of us! :)

LOL :chuckle nooo i did not do a search on nurses and doughnuts...what i meant was i was reading a thread about "things they don't tell you in med school" and one of the things was if there are doughnuts or food for the nurses don't touch it...and then all these docs started making jokes about how nurses are fat and lazy and somebody said "hey why don't you take away the doughnuts?" and some jerk said "haha if there were no doughnuts there would be no nurses"...so i meant if you wanna find that thread do a search for "nurses and doughnuts" lol but that does sound funny now that i'm rereading it

Hi. Only 1.5% (staggering) of all practicing CRNAs are involved in education of SRNAs. I think contributing in this regard helps guarantee that there will be new CRNAs! The future of our profession depends on it! Be a teacher!

I am enrolled in a CRNA program right now, but my plan is to teach! I ssooo look forward to it. I really enjoy teaching. It is true we need more CRNA's in education.
