How does one transition to UR and learn Interqual if not in a hospital setting?

Specialties Case Management

I am an older nurse with many years of experience. I do not have the stamina for floor nursing anymore, but would like to use my knowledge and skills in a less physically demanding and stress producing job. Have applied for UR/Case management jobs for approx 2 months with no luck because I don't have Interqual/Millimen experience. I do have home care/hospice case management experience. There are no courses on line to learn Interqual/Millimen. How does one make this transition alone? There is an increasing need for case managers involving high tech internet experience. Do I have any chance of getting in and how?? Thanks.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Moved to case management nursing.

The best way to get into UR/case management is an internal transfer within your facility. I got in through a contractor position. My company had a hiring freeze, but were desperate for help. Their budget allowed for hiring contractors, but not internal transfers. Go figure.

There are no courses on line to learn Interqual/Millimen because they are copyrighted.

Search the contractors like Entech, Aerotech, etc. You also should look at disease management, etc. through the big boys like Humana, Aetna, and Blue Cross.

Good luck, it can be done.
