How often are you asked for opiates?

I was talking with a former ER NP who said one of the things that burned her out was drug addicts seeking opiate pain meds. Just curious how common this is for NP's?

For the crush and water method - this would only be utilized for immediate release narcs right? Then, don't you have to re-dose more times, thus taking more time?

(Just curious as I haven't worked in the prison setting.)

Yes for the immediate release drugs. The extended release morphine is the one they swallow if front of you, only to go back to the cell , vomit it up and sell it. The inmate that buys it then washing the coating off before melting it down and shooting it up their arms. The prison doctors were scolded by I believe the DEA for over prescribing narcotics. With all the drug addicts in prison, it makes it hard for the people that really need them and wouldn't abuse them.

I prescribe daily, I say no daily. I follow current guidelines with how I prescribe. Most of my prescriptions I write are refills for physicians that I work with who are out for the day . I am not required to do any controlled refills for them. I only refill for clear cut refills on controlled substance contracts that are up to date on visits and urine screens.... and who I feel comfortable prescribing for. Last I looked on our. State monitoring system I was in 2% for amount of opioids I am prescribing and 100% compliant with looking up in database before prescribing. ( I look up anyone I think may ask me for a benzo or narcotic to see what they have gotten in past before I even see them)

I get it a lot but I don't let it get to me.
