I am a new nurse practitioner with zero wound care experience. I interviewed for a job last week and was offered $40 per visit with no other benefits, up to 5 visits per day, 4 days a week. No gas reimbursement, no ceu, no medical ins, no 401k, nothing. I was insulted to say the least (my LPN friend makes more than $40k/yr and starting salary for new NP is $80k.+ with bene) and didnt have a chance to counter the offer as the interview ended with an interruption from other staff.
So now I learn this interviewer is actually checking my refrences this week. The interviewer said they'd call me this week to follow up and such. So what do I say on the phone? What's the going rate for a 1099 independent contractor (or employee) for nurses at all levels? LPN, RN, NP.
Also, the interviewer told me the private ins co only pays one flat fee per visit, regardless if an LPN does it or if a doctor does it. That seems fishy to me, what do you think?
I also see other jobs for NP wound care, no experience offering $110-$120/k yr. I just can't understand why my offer would be so low?? I must have stupid written on my face, lol??

Sounds like you were interviewing with home care? The insurance reimburses the same per visit for skilled nursing...LPN, RN, APN...all skilled nursing.
You do not want that job...trust me...you couldn't even get their full attention to complete an interview...how much do you suppose they will support you (with no previous experience) once you are out on your own with no mileage and no nuthin? Tell them that you appreciate their confidence and the opportunity to speak with them but...blah, blah, blah...don't burn any bridges, but do not take that job unless they are willing to sweeten the pot significantly.

Wow!! That is low for an MSN prepared nurse! I'm a May 09 RN BSN new graduate doing home care and get $75/hr for opening a case and $55/hr for revisits. I would try another agency. Good luck!

I also think you should look at different agencies.

WAY TOO LOW......but it is true about the insurance reimbursement. I work as a trach/vent nurse in home care agencies and hospitals. Home Care insurance coverage is notoriously low. I get paid the same for a hi-tech/ medically complicated vent case as I would for "babysitting" a no-tech seizure disordered child. Sometimes, you can play "lets make a deal" and negotiate a temporary hourly increase if the agency is desperate enough ( but I was more likely to be offered gas or grocery cards instead). I was offered $40/visit for newborn assessments in Southeastern Pa..
As a NP, I would think that you would be much better off in acute care or wound clinic settings.
Homecare will NEVER really pay well (hourly) in my humble opinion.
