How much fluid bolus before epidural on your unit?

Published

Just wondering how much fluid bolus you are required to get in before anesthesia will do an epidural on your unit?

(We do 2000mL)

Thx in advance! :)

We had a particularly bad case of pulm edema the other night that scared the pants off me. And it wasn't even my patient. Once they got some Lasix in her to diurese, she put out like 1100ml in 10min, and that was just the start. Really, an unnecessary thing for a c/s in the absence of any other underlying cardiac issue. Thanks, SBE.

We do 500mls! Once when we had private obs coming to our unit the anaesthetist always did the iv, and they'd place the epidural before 100mls when in!! Didn't seem to make much difference. Wonder if there is any research that backs the practice up? Anyone know??

Our orders are 500-1000ml for epidural and 1000ml in the pre-op holding.

All it takes is one case of pulmonary edema to make me a believer.

Yeah, when they are frothing at the mouth & begging you not to let them die, it makes you think twice before cranking up that IVF....:o
