How much floor experience should I have before applying to OB?

I now realize that I won't be able to enter the OB specialty right out of school which has honestly broken my heart. I would like to try to apply with a few years of floor experience under my belt. How much floor experience do you think would be appropriate? Is med-surg experience good enough or will I be ignored for not having OB experience? What sort of certifications should I be working toward while I get this experience?

While there are some OB units that will hire new grads, it's generally a good idea to have at least 1 year of med/surg under your belt before transitioning to a specialty unit.

I had one year of ICU and 3 years of LPN exp. before I got into Mother/Baby.

I started on a progressive care unit for 1 year and transferred to the mother/baby unit within my hospital's system. Don't worry at all. Once you make it over to OB, you'll appreciate it more. I know I do. I would rather quit than to go back to my previous unit.
