Hello everyone, I will have a year experience in acute care in September which is the minimum requirement for 2 Hospice jobs I have recently applied for here in NC.
Does anyone know what the salary rate for a Hospice nurse is? Especially in NC? I've always wanted to be a Hospice nurse but no one would hire me in NC when I first moved here as a New Grad last year.
Second, those that do work as a Hospice nurse here, how do you like it?
My mother had a Hospice nurse when she passed away with cancer and that nurse is the reason why I went to nursing school in the first place. I always will remember her for her kindness and the care she gave to my mother. I want to be that Hospice nurse, it would be my dream job!
Any info would be much appreciated!:redbeathe
They often try to run it as the same Policies and Procedures as the hospital.. not often applicable.
They do not market themselves like regular hospice agencies and therefore usually are just a self referring source. ( I worked at one that closed up at a major medical ctr due to low census )
Hospice's usually do NOT make a ton of cash.. and therefor are not a profit maker for a money hungry hospital.. also the other reason my hospital based hospice closed.
Usually have a low census.. which is not a good thing.. over staffing, money etc.. like I said, Hospice is not a HUGE money maker unless you are a Vitas, Odyssey etc who have marketing specialiist, resources up the ying yang and referral sources other than one hospital.

Your comment really caught my eye. It echoes how I feel about nursing in general. I am currently working LTC but am looking to jump to hospice. I took care of my father in his last ten days of life this past summer. I realized I've been doing end of life care throughout my nursing career.
I was concerned I might have to take a pay cut but am encouraged by the add ons for mileage and on call.
I am looking forward to the next stage in my career.

Thank you for input! I'm making a list of all the positives and negatives, they have not offered me a job yet but I am not even sure I want it or not. I wish I knew what to do if they do offer it. Maybe they won't even offer a job, and I won't have to worry about it, I worked so hard to get an interview and now I'm having second thoughts.
Tell me the negatives of a hospital run Hospice.
