What is you Pt to nurse numbers?
What state are you in?
Hospital or ECF?
missouri here, i work med-surg usually.
either shift, a or p, is
1 charge rn.
1 rn or lpn for up to 8 pt. 9 or more is 2 team leaders.
same for techs, 1:8, >9=2
we also have a ward clerk.
we are supposed to be able to call in extra help based on acuity, but it has to be pre-approved by the don, and she's a schmuck who never fails to say i believe you can handle it. ( she also never shows face on the floor to lend a hand, if that paints a picture.)
1 patient in active labor (and that one patient will monopolize your time-the q15minute charting for epidurals/pitocin really add up!). plus, after they have the baby, and the nursery RN goes up stairs, then you have 2 patients!
3-4 antepartum patients
maybe 1 patient in early labor, one PP getting ready to be transferred upstairs
i work on a pediatric floor and our matrix for nine patients which is supposedly our average daily census (many times is well above this and also includes adults) calls for 2 rns a assistant and a secretary. We rarely have a assistant scheduled. Our turnover is so high.during the winter we may discharge all nine and admit 9 or more in a 12 hr period. It takes two to start ivs onlittle ones so during that time there is no nurse on the floor since we are in the treatment room.needless to say beds and baths are the least of our priorities

Work nights (18:30 to 06:30) in a Burn ICU and take 1 to 2 patients, with a burn tech until about 23:00. Sometimes those 2 patients feel like 20. Very rarely sit down throughout the night...eating is a treat!
