Hi,
For the first time I have more male teachers than female teachers in a semester.
The curriculum of the AA-RN program I am in goes like this:
Nurs1-basics w/in normal limits assesment skills.
-four female teachers
Nurs2-illness assessment of problems of human systems,
-four female teachers
Nurs3-critical care assessment,
-three males, and one female teacher
Nurs4-neonates/peds/psych
-four female teachers.
What I have noted is the difference in the attitudes. While every teacher in the program is very blunt in their aproach, thus far it has been my experience that the CCRN male teachers in this program, they don't smile as much, they don't make as many jokes, and they sure has hell don't have time for bs. I think I like the no nonsense aproach. I don't know maybe b/c i'm a guy as well? Just sorta thinking out loud here...
Did you, or do you now have male professors?
In your opinion, do you think the gender of your prof makes a difference?
We have 3 male instructors at my school. One of them is a former Army nurse. You can tell he's been in the military, because he's very detailed oriented and kind of barks out his points during lecture. Personally, I find that his lectures tend to be very engaging/challenging and enjoyable, although a lot of other people in my class don't seem to like him. Then there is one who has a very quiet, monotonous tone and is great at putting everyone to sleep. And the third guy, he constantly makes jokes during lecture.
Basically they each have their own style/personality, just like the female instructors do.
We don't have any males in our nursing department (BSN). I kind of wish we did though, too much estrogen in the department! hah! They are great instructors I just wish there was more of a "manly" influence in our department. I get tired of questions about the best way to respond to a patient if they are crying, etc., no two situations are alike and it's impossible to make a judgement call like that over 2 sentences of info.

At my school there are 2 male critical care instructors (both do clinical and one lectures), also, I heard rumors that after I finished up med-surg they were orienting a male instuctor there. The one I had for critical care lecture was great, he could explain the material and he wasn't "all stern" either as the OP seems to worry.
