How long did you have to wait?

Hi everyone! I was just wondering how long have you ever waited to retake a class that yuo failed in the nursing program? I failed Fundamentals in March and at my school when you fail a class in the nursing program you have to submit a letter of readmission, and wait to be readmitted into that class. Has anyone else ever have to do this at their school and how long did it take. A friend of mine was in the same situation last August and she wasn't able to take the class over until March of this year. I think that is to long to wait. Let me know what you think.

Wow that is a long time to wait, what did you do in that time frame?

As a nursing instructor, I can tell you that the "wait" is intentional by the school. Instead of letting someone come back into the program after a failure, the thought is that a.) They most likely have already admitted the next class, and probably didn't figure in space for students who may have failed, so waiting another semester allows for planning in an environment where nursing schools are admitting at full capacity, (They are not going to bump a newly admitted student to make room for a student who failed a course), and b.) Sometimes sitting out for awhile allows the student to get things together in order to be able to be successful when they return to school, as most of the failures that I've seen were due to life's happenings and as we know, we can't just change life in a blip, it takes some time. Students who sit out for a bit of time usually return fully charged and ready to tackle nursing and are armed for success.

BTW, there are many schools that I know of who do not allow for a student who has failed 1 or 2 courses to return, as they are permanently out of nursing. And I know of one local school that makes a program dismissal sit out for 5 years before allowing them to reapply.

My school does not allow re-entry if you fail a class. Of course, I think it's because we have 900 applicants for 70 seats.

This happened to me last year and its pretty universal to wait a year once you failed a course in nursing school. I did not pass my 3rd semester. As soon as I found out I went to talk to the heads of the department and submitted my application for advanced placement the same day for readmission the following year to repeat that semester. I was not guaranteed a spot, so I took classes for the next two semesters to boost my GPA, retook my HOBET (the aptitude test) because my test scores were expiring. I just kept going and tried keeping my head up. Now, I am back in nursing school and almost done with the semester I didn't pass last year.
