How long did it take you to find your first job?

Published

I graduated from nursing school in May and started looking for nursing jobs in July. I know I should have looked sooner, but didn't because of so much other stuff going on in my life. I have recently been applying to several hospitals and still have not landed an interview yet! I am starting to feel like crap and like I will never get a job! I don't understand why I am not being chosen for interviews.

I actually just landed my first job. I too graduated in May, took my boards in June and got licensed in July.

I apples to hundreds of jobs from April until now and I just got my first offer yesterday. you need to apply to every new grad job available and try to get ahold of the nurse recruiter and the hospitals your applying to.

You may want to look into other types of nursing if money is of issue to you, long term care facilities are always hiring new grads I find.

Long story short, don't give up. You need to be on top of each job opening with all the hospitals you are applying to, and you NEED to follow up with them.

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

I licensed in June, and got my first job (in my desired specialty) in October. And that was with 1.5 years of tech experience and 1.5 years of EMS experience. The market here was really saturated with nurses and there are still

some underemployed RN's from my class over two years later. The market seems to be loosening up for new grads around here, but still tough. Keep on trying though, be persistent and don't give up!

If your area is anything like mine it's because all the new grad jobs are long gone. I had my first job secured by March of my senior year in college, to start in September.

I actually use to work at a long term facility as a cna and loved it however I have held out on applying to them because I would like to work in a hospital.

I have followed up on several of my applications. But I could be more on it. How long do you usually wait after submitting an application to follow up? A lot of places are so hard to follow up with, I am only able to talk to someone in HR and they all say basically the same thing, If we are interested we will let you know.

Congrats and good luck with your new job!

I have 3 years of CNA experience and I thought it would help, but some of my classmates that had no medical experience whatsoever have already found jobs. :banghead:

I think I am one of the last few in my class that has not found a job yet. But I am glad y'all told me how long it took from applying to actually getting a job, it makes me feel a little better!

(sorry if my replies are confusing guys I am new to this site and bad about quoting who I am replying to.)

Thanks! Normally when I call I specifically ask for a recruiter on whatever unit I'm on, and I'll call as soon as two days after I submit an app and if I don't get ahold of anyone I just try the next day. You got this!
