........after blood is hung does a hemolytic tranfusion reaction usually occur?

This was a question on our exam today, and I couldnt for the life of me think of it. Even looking it up after the fact has led me no where.

Anyone know??

Specializes in MPCU.

I've never seen a true hemolytic reaction. This source: http://www.itxm.org/TMU2002/Issue6.htm says within two hours.

Specializes in ER, ICU, Medsurg.

We were taught to stay with the person for the first 15 minutes (at the very least) b/c if a reaction is going happen, it will happen then. Then do checks every 15-30 thereafter.

Specializes in ED.

I too was taught that if it happens it will occur in the first 15 minutes, my mom who is a nurse says that it will occur almost immediately.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

The worst case scenario would be anaphylaxsis. The patient experiences respiratory problems and death, if untreated, within 15 minutes.
